Hi,

Happy Bigpipe customer :) Just becoming slightly concerned regarding the "soon" responses to past questions of the past year and a half regarding when Bigpipe will peer. Is there any news regarding this, because while I'm likely in the minority - the lack of peering is becoming rather annoying.

I understand why IPv6 hasn't historically been high up on the priority list. Just curious whether there's been any movement in that also.

Both of these were brought up on GPForums recently. BigPipeNZ replied regarding IPv6, but missed or ignored the peering part.

we have plans for IPv6, it's just not a top top priority right now.

I'm totally happy to discuss and listen to people's arguments as to why we should prioritise IPv6 above other stuff.
So far though, I've never actually seen a reason why they think it's important right now beyond "I like to tinker with stuff" - and that really only applies to a very very small number of people.
Whilst it would be great to please everybody, the reality is we only have so much time and money and must make trade-offs.

Yep, IPv6 answer is still the same.

I expect IPv6 to happen at some point this calendar year, but things can always change if new stuff comes to light.

sorry I missed the peering one. I'll need to talk to network guys about it.

What tangible benefits would you expect Bigpipe customers to get from peering vs what we have today?

Personally for me - Cloudflare (Auckland), other CDN's locally here in NZ and generally less latency for some things. It would also be awesome to get some PoP's around the country (Wellington, Christchurch, maybe Dunedin if they're special enough) so traffic doesn't always have to go up to Auckland - not a biggie, but would be awesome to see.

To expand more generally on MichaelMurphy - it's being able to actually take advantage of the actual bandwidth available to me. Personally, it's frustrating to have to trial-and-error New Zealand sites in regards to finding suitable Linux mirrors. At times, I wonder whether it's worth the additional premium for a 200mbit connection.

From your business' point of view, less knowledgeable users may just interpret Bigpipe as "slow" for this reason depending on what kind of local content they're retrieving.

I've noticed since switching from another provider who does that general web browsing feels slower and I'm not sure why

Doesn't seem like that would be anything to do with having a pop in Christchurch - unless your general web browsing includes loads of christchurch hosted websites. How much local traffic do you actually do?

And really, even in the cases of accessing stuff hosted in CHCH (of which there isn't really that much) you're talking about an extra few ms for the traffic to go up and down the country - I'd be very surprised if that was noticeable in most cases.

maybe if you are a gamer wanting to play on christchurch-based servers then I can see that as something you might need? But for the majority of traffic I don't see how it would make all that much difference.

FWIW Truenet seems to think Bigpipe webpage downloading is pretty fast. Best ISP on ADSL, 3rd best on VDSL.

Sorry yes you're right, I meant my comment to be two separate ideas really.

CHCH PoP so my work traffic doesn't go up to Auckland and back (like you say, shouldn't be noticeable)

Web browsing just seems maybe a little slower - could be different CDNs, could be just something different about network or my computer

That's the main benefit in my eyes, too. Avoiding the occasional "best path is via Australia" gaming server issue is another plus.

Reddit won't go down when traffic takes a scenic route in Australia. Traffic to/from other ISPs (the ones which peer) will have little to no cost.
