Hi,

Do NZ telecom shape VPN traffic? I've subscribed to a Uk VPN provider but the speed is appalling. I know it's not the VPN provider, as I've tried 2 and they are both the same. If I connect to the VPN and then run a speed test, I get the following results:

down: 374 kbps
up: 292 kbps

when not connected I get:

down: 6986kbps
up: 566 kbps

It's rubbish.

Wow, thats really interesting.
Is it possible to tracert the VPN and non VPN at all, and see if they are taking different routes? If they are identical, it would seem telecom are shaping VPN traffic, i imagine to try and counter people using them to get past other things like p2p that they would shape.

Where is the speed test to/from each time?

The more relevant number is to measure the bandwidth across your actual VPN link, and not involving an outside-the-vpn leg.

Is this a VPN to a server?

Telecom don't actively shape any traffic that I'm aware of (unless you're on Go Large).

Keep in mind that over a VPN it's going to rely on the relative connection speed of the other end as well.

I would be interested to see a traceroute from your end to the VPN endpoint, then another showing traffic through the VPN to the ultimate destination (e.g. the speed test source)
