Hi there, Geekzone.

I remember reading Telecom's ToS, and that running a server on a home broadband connection was not allowed. However, is running a homeserver (with very little throughput, about 100MB a few times a week) be held against me, and what would the consquences of doing this be?

Violation of a contract with no penalty clauses in it is nothing.

They only say in the contract that they can terminate it, so thats what would be worst case.

I don't think Telecom would terminate an account for hosting your own content for your own use (or family sharing) as a Windows Home Server. Of course the story would be different if it was a commercial site.

It may be in the T and C's somewhere but equally they say on the pro plans you can get a static ip and go on to say 'mainly for those running their own server/mail server'

I've been running a web server and email off my home adsl connection for 5+ years - if you're using it as a webserver that gets lots of hits it will slow quickly due to the 500kbps upload speed.

I've been running certain services on my home server (for example VNC) for years. Have also at times hosted private, non commercial webservers & FTP servers without any issues.
