Hi,
First post on Geekzone.

I have brought back a T-Mobile Touch Pro from the USA.
It has UMTS bands 1900/850 and 900/2100 listed in the phone setting screen.
With a Telecom SIM it is picking up only 2100, but not 850.
Can anyone suggest a possible reason?

It works fine on Vodafone.

You need to enable UTMS 850 as the Telecom Xt Mobile network operates on that frequency.

1900/850 on T-Mobile is 2G only. The phone is 900/2100 3G so not suitable for Telecom XT.

Yes,

I selected UMTS band 1900/850.
However, no service.

Must be 2G 850/1900 and 3G 900/2100 so is only compatible with Vodafone. Sorry.

[UPDATE] from GSM Arena:

2G Network
GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900

3G Network
HSDPA 900 / 2100

If you want a device that works on Telecom XT you have to buy from AT&T.

To explain a little further:
The following is from the T-Mobile support website.

Changing the band (HTC Touch Pro II)
When the device is turned off and then back on, band selection is automatic. If automatic band selection fails, follow the steps below to manually change the band selection.
To change the band, perform the following steps:
1. At the Home screen, touch and hold the active tab.
2. Slide left or right to the Settings tab.
3. Tap Communications.
4. Tap Phone.
5. Tap Band.
6. Tap a band setting:
Auto
GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(900+2100)
GSM(1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850)
UMTS(2100+800)

This mirrors the settings available on the phone. It also has a setting to force UMTS, before you select the band.
I assume these settings reflect the hardware capabilities of the phone, or am I mistaken?

I put a NZ SIM card in it while in USA, and it immediately started to roam on AT&T.
By playing with the band settings, I could change the roaming from AT&T to T-Mobile, and back

It won't be the end of the world if I have to go to Vodafone, but I'm a longtime Telecom customer and would like to stay there.

And to answer c71931f, I know it's using 2100, because if I set it to UMTS 2100+800, it still picks up Telecom 3G, plus there is no service outside the city.

GSM is 2G, UMTS is 3G. Telecom XT is a pure UMTS network operating on 850MHz. You can see in your post this device is made for UMTS 2100+800 so it won't work in New Zealand with the Telecom XT network.

It operates in the US with a New Zealand SIM because it's probably falling back to 2G there.

I wouldn't change operators because of the handset - I'd change handset...

Mauricio,

I understand that UMTS = 3g = Telecom on 850/2100.
In my post, I also mentioned that there is a band for UMTS 1900/850.
So, I would have expected that setting to pick up the Telecom 850 band.

My guess is that the phone is hardware capable, but UMTS 850 is not enabled in the ROM.

You may be correct that it defaulted to 2G in USA.

Thanks for your input. If I find out anything more, I'll report back here.

I would've thought that the second option in your post, GSM(1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850), would work. I actually thought that T-Mobile ran UMTS at 1700 though, so I wonder why that's not one of the options.

My thoughts exactly!

The default T-Mobile UMTS bands are noted on the box and in the specs.
The ones listed above are for use outside the T-Mobile network.

Odd that 2100 works and 850 doesn't (both UMTS)

Odd those settings allude to the fact the phone is a quad band UMTS capable phone, however AFAIK no such phone exists yet..

Wow, I didn't even notice that. Maybe there are two models, one with 850 and one with 900, both using the same ROM.

Nokia has some in the pipeline... If you go to the option on the Telecom HTC Touch Pro 2 you will see:

GSM (900+1800) + UMTS (900+2100)
GSM (1900+850) + UMTS (1900+850)
UMTS (2100+850)

Hmmm. It should work on Vodafone's 900MHz 3G too then. Should test this.

Interesting.
Looks like Telecom TP2 has the same band options as T-Mobile.
I've got a 2degrees sim card in mine at the moment, and it is happily roaming on Vodafone 2g.

Would be interesting to see if the Telecom TP2 works on Vodafone 3G.
