Hi
I have been trying to find out what a master splitter is/looks like as I'm in rented accommodation and want to upgrade my connection from ADSL to VDSL. Can someone inform me if the splitter goes into the phone socket or if it replaces it with a new socket box as I may need to get permission from the landlord if it's going to change anything cosmetic to the property?

Any information or pics would be helpful

You won't see it once it is installed, but you end up with another jackpoint that is dedicated to the modem only, and do not need to use any plug in filters at all.

yep, just look for a phone jack that is labelled 'DSL' or 'Broadband' or 'VDSL'

If you have one of those, then you have a master splitter installed.

Also, if you are moving to an apartment and it only has 1 phone jack, then you don't need one anyway.

ETA: you shouldn't need permission from the landlord IMO, although courtesy would suggest you let him know. It's good for the landlord as it means the broadband experience will be better in the apartment (probably)

Any VDSL install requires a tech to actually visit the location, so in a way it doesn't really matter. Order it and they'll go through the motions of confirming it's available. If they come and can't get it to work then you stay on ADSL and don't have to pay anything. You need a VDSL specific master filter anyway, so some of the early ADSL ones won't be used anyway, even if it's already installed in your location. Good luck

incorrect. Bigpipe do not mandate VDSL splitter install. It's not always necessary.

I wouldn't stress about it. The installer comes, you end up with a nice new wall socket and hopefully a far better internet experience. Sure let the landlord know but I don't see how any reasonable person would object. It is an upgrade after all. I don't think a landlord should have to pay for it however (just chucking that out there as I am sure it will be commented on sooner or later)

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I shouldn't comment here really, probably best that way, but I will say that whilst it's not always necessary, sometimes it is.

If the OP goes with Vodafone, the section this is posted in, then a real tech install will be required.
This will address instances where there is no existing master filter, or where the existing is not sufficient for VDSL.
