Hi there,

I am having some issues.
I have never had problems setting up a wireless router before, although I have never done it on a cable connection before. This is drving me nuts.

I cannot connect to 10.1.1.1 to setup router.
I did connect to it when I first got the router home, but I pressed reboot on the router and now it wont connect.

I have the Motorolla Cable modem supplied by TC plugged into my router. I have the router plugged into my computer. I have them all powered on. I have tried to turn the power on and off.

Do I have to have the ADSL plug plugged into the phone line?

I have tried to access the 10.1.1.1 site with the ADSL phone line cord both connected and not connected without success. I figured I probably didnt need it connected since its a cable connection.

Could someone please tell me what I am doing wrong!

It sounds like the Router you are talking about is an ADSL Modem/Router (like a DSL604T).

I am not familiar with TCL cable modems, but if you plug the cable out of that straight into your computer, do you get the internet?

IF SO: you may be able to plug the cable straight into one of the LAN ports on the Dlink, this should make the Dlink act like a switch, and you should be able to connect wirelessly or wired through the DLink. The Dlink may need to be told to act as an Access Point, in which case you may need more help. You should be able to log into the Dlink by plugging only it into your computer (no other things plugged in, so the Dlink assigns you an IP address on its network)

If NOT: then you may need another router (this time a router only, no ADSL) which can do the PPP through the TCL modem (the username and password to get you on the internet).

Not that I am a expert but sounds like a Router issue.

Out of interest - I have telstra internet for years and started with a netgear wireless router but it was too flacky - so I ditched it for a Linksys WRT54. Since then its so stable - I have moved the modem and router into my roofspace. Only $$$$ to fix.

Hi, as Trig says, you cannot use a ADSL modem/router with a TCL Motorola Cable modem, it simply will not work. I have assumed you are using an ADSL modem based on two details, firstly none of the DLink wired (non ADSL) routers that I am aware of use the old firmware that defaults to 10.1.1.x for the lan subnet and you mention the ADSL port plugged into the phone line.

With TCL cable you require router with an ethernet WAN port not a DSL WAN port, I suggest you purchse the correct router.

Edit, and just to clarify and correct Trigs comments, the TCL cable service does not use PPP but static IP so you must load the IP details into the WAN settings of a ethernet WAN router to gain access, do not use PPP it will not work. Also if you connect your current router via one of its LAN ports you will not be able to connect more than one PC to the netwok at a time as only one Static IP is assigned to each connection (a NAT router gives you access for multiple PC's)

The model is a DSL-G604T indeed.

Looks like I will be buying another router....

This was apparenly used for TC before, but I cant get it to work.

Hi, there is no way it could EVER function as a router on TCL cable, as a simple wireless AP that a single PC could connect wirelessly yes, but more than one PC, not possible.

If your after recommendations for a router then I would recommend either TP-Links or DLinks. I have linked a couple of them below, these will be absolutely fine for typical domestic use. There may be GZ members mention using particular models with all manner of 3rd party firmware on them, but from my experience most modern routers with stock firmware work just fine, story may have been significantly different 5-10yrs ago.

I've had nothing nut hassles with DLinks on my cable connection. I went through 2. They just "died".
I've also killed a WRT54G and GS !
I'm currently running a DSE-branded router and I've had to reboot it twice in a year! I'm pretty sure it's the longest lasting of any of them. Great firmware too, heaps of options (if you're after a budget router, anyway)

If the other online one is significantly better then I will go for it. DP is just keen to get it sorted asap!

Friends who are with TC have asked me to set up a wireless router for them, they have already gone and purchased a Linksys WAG120N, from reading here I suspect that this will not work on TC being a router/modem. Can anyone confirm this so I can get them to change it.

Has anyone got a step by step guide to setting up a wireless router with TC, I can't locate a simple walk thru.

The linksys one I got was fine.

And all i needed to do was basically plug it in and install it as per instrutions on box.

Hi, pretty much, connect your pc to one of the lan ports, go into the network settings and set the PC's TCP settings to automatically get an address (ie DHCP) and same for DNS if you have previously set the TCP settings that TCL told you into the TCP setup then note them down before you change it to auto.

Once done your PC should get an address from the router (after its booted), login to the router using the 192.168.1.1 address (or whatever is on the box) and using your web browser go to the web interface of the router and to the WAN settings, then select Static IP, then set the IP address, subnet, gateway and DNS servers as noted from TCL, save that and it shoudl all be go.

Thanks Cyril, from some of your previous posts you mention that modem/router combos will not connect to TCL, so will the WAG120N still work following your instructions. They will be connecting one PC via cable and one Laptop wirelessly.
