Is it just me or is Microsoft just trying to force customers into keeping Windows Updates set to 'Automatically Download and Install' in Windows 8.1 by releasing Windows Defender updates every, single, day?

Every day across all of my OS's running Windows 8.1 I get pestered to download and update Windows Defender definitions. Why isn't this functionality baked into Windows Defender? Why can't I set those updates to Automatic but not all of the Office and Windows ones which need curation?

It's so annoying getting notifications from my Windows Home Server that 4 PC's need to be updated when the updates are just virus definitions.

It feels as if they know it'll annoy me into setting these PC's to automatically install updates, rather than provision them as I see fit.

Defender does update itself outside of whatever you have set in WU

Nathan can you be a bit more specific?

Where can I specify in Windows 8.1 that I want all updates besides Windows Defender Definitions to be held for curating?

At present, I have automatic updates turned off but I still wish to be notified when REALLY important updates are available. This behaviour used to work great on Windows 7, but having migrated all of my PC's and Laptops to Windows 8.1 - this has become a real pain to work with as it appears to be all or nothing.

Can you advise how to have the built in Windows Defender Updates applied automatically, and thus no notification in Windows Update, whilst other updates, service packs and Microsoft patches are held to be installed as and when I see fit?

Thanks.

It sounds like issue is around notifications, which then flows up into WHS?

Defender updates even if you don't install updates from the WU control panel

can you tell me more about the notifications? I don't run WHS anymore, can you tell me what the notifications say/are called

if you launch Defender you should see which signature version/time its on.
