Windows announced that our upgrade from Win 7 to 10 was ready and so away we went. Everything went smoothly up to about 45%, then the progress messages stopped and the hard drive went quiet.

Now I can't start Windows, since the faulty installation of 10 has sidelined Windows 7. The only advice I have had is to "login in as administrator from the Start button". But I haven't got a Start button because I haven't got a working copy of Windows. .

How can I recover Windows 7 when I haven't got a working operating system?

Grateful for any advice,
Mike

what happens on your PC?  What do you see?  Do you have any OS?

On startup, the Dell logo and two function keys - F2 and F10 are displayed.

After a few seconds, the Windows 10 symbol (the small blue window) appears and below it, a circling pattern of dots. It *looks* as if Windows is about to load, but then the screen goes blank and after a minute or so, the hard drive goes quiet.

I interpret this as due to a partially-installed copy of Windows 10 which has no functionality and has pushed Windows 7 out of use.

The F2 key opens some administration menus which look as if they would enable Windows 7 to be restored, but they require me to log in as administrator and as far as I know, I can't do that unless Windows loads first.

is this on a different PC than the one  you updated on August 2nd that made your speakers stop working, if so can you download the usb win10 copy on the working one and install from that onto this one that has not installed properly?

Restore from backup. You have a backup, right? Macrium Reflect Free is... free. If no backup then reinstall your licensed OS. If you have no licensed OS... it's Linux for you.

Thanks. Tomorrow morning I'll get out my shovel and dig out the Windows 7 disk from wherever.

Cheers,
Mike

For Ubernoob ...

Yes, it's my wife's computer on to which we attempted to install Windows 10 today expecting that the installation would go as smoothly as it did on mine.

I hadn't thought of putting my copy of Windows 10 on a usb and transferring it, but the usb would surely have to have  a pretty big capacity.  Can you tell me what size the file would be?

The OS is about 4GB - I used an 8GB USB stick just in case.
