Should have external power plug, but it should still run limited without the extra power source so if it's not running at all that's a worry

I have a pci express 8800GT, it absolutely wont run without the pci express power lead plugged into the board from the main psu.
He may need to upgrade his power supply, the silverstone ST50-EF Plus is highly recommended at a good price $125ish.

Most high end cards require power from the PCI-e connector. If that is not connected then the card will make a rather loud noise.

The cards usually come with an adapter to connect 2x 4 pin molex to 6 pin PCI-e since not all PSUs have the 6 pin plug. You will be able to run the 8800GT with any 400w or above PSU.
