I don't mean a list like msconfig, but I'd like to see a commentary such as "AVG starting... Office monitor starting... Spybot resident starting..." etc.
The reason is, most computers I diagnose that run slow take an age to start, and I'd like to pinpoint the particular culprits bogging down the startup process.
Anyone with any ideas?

Why not just disable everything using msconfig, remove all shortcuts from the startup menu, plus remove entries from the registry - only leaving the bare basics of what you need.

I do this on all my new equipment, since most manufacturers (eg HP) install so much crapware it bogs your system down.

Yes thanks for that. I suppose I could disable everything and then enable them again one by one, but that would mean restarting multiple times and just 'playing by ear' to get a feel for how long the process is taking.
I had visions of seeing a list where I get: 5 seconds for this... 7 seconds for that... 42 seconds for this... aha! you need to go!
Maybe this isn't actually possible?

Have a look at Procmon http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx There are 100s if not 1000s of things happening at startup.

I personally open up Autoruns also from sysinternals, its more detailed than msconfig but doesnt show start times.
In general its not hard to go through the logon tab and see what you do and dont need. Typically culprits i trash are java updater, adobe speed launch (in fact remove adobe reader and install foxit), apple updater, logitech updater. I usually get rid of the AC97 sound control panel too since it works fine without, even using SPDIF.
For my home computer i got rid of everything except steam, windows live messenger, nod32 and logitech setpoint.
