I had a surprise this morning when I looked in the Tap & Pay settings on my mobile:
Tap & Pay selection ASB app

This was not an option yesterday. I know this because I opened an ANZ account yesterday so I could use contactless payments from my phone (not the same device) and it was not in the options on there at the time.

Of course I had to try it out, but I didn't get far:

There were no applicable options in the App, so I spoke to branch staff at ASB and they had no idea this was even coming. They checked their intranet and apparently it's "Coming Soon" with no current ETA. They were not able to sort any kind of virtual card for me to make this operational.

So I hope this means that ASB is trying out HCE for contactless payments? These screenshots were taken on my HTC One M7 with GPE firmware, but it's also selectable on my Nexus 6P.

This is interesting... And you can do this without a Semble (secure elements) SIM?

I wasn't aware NZ had any sort of HCE NFC available yet (can soemone confirm or deny this assumption?), but if that's true, it's very intriguing!

ASB app upgraded a few days ago, can also confirm this is now a payment option on my phone.

Excellent! I just checked my app updates and the new version of the ASB app added NFC control to the permissions list. Upon updating I now get the ASB Mobile option in the settings screen (Galaxy S6).

I'm glad as this will hopefully open up compatibility with more phones and no more needing a specific SIM however it'll be slightly annoying though to lose the ability to have an "Always On" card as is possible with SEMBLE but I would much prefer a native solution than having to have a specific SIM.

I wonder what this means for SEMBLE in the long run? Since the only other options they have are BNZ and Snapper I suspect they will either dissolve or try to branch out more in to rewards cards etc.

@darthkram : Can you please explain "it'll be slightly annoying though to lose the ability to have an "Always On" card as is possible with SEMBLE"? I can't use Semble on my devices because Google doesn't provide Single Wire Protocol support in Android, that's added by manufacturers as part of their customized firmware. But I don't believe I had to do anything to make a payment with the ANZ app this morning? The only action - if any - might have been unlocking my phone. I am unsure as this is just a fingerprint for me.
I genuinely don't know what the difference in experience would be here.

@NZLion - With SEMBLE I don't even need to turn on my phone, I can just pull it out of my pocket and hold it over the scanner, slightly insecure - I know, but I do like the convenience.

I was under the impression that you actually had to open the ANZ app to make a payment but now that I know you just have to unlock it that makes me definitely more favourable to the native implementation. For as much as I like not having to turn on my phone, given the increasing focus on security having to unlock it does seem like a better idea.

darthkram pretty much said what I was going to write. I do enjoy having the option of my NFC (and Semble) working when my phone is turned off and has no power.

interesting to see this added.

on my device, it shows up in the NFC tap and pay menu, but is not selectable.

Due to semble not liking roots at all, i haven't actually gotten around to trying out it yet.

I wonder where this leaves Semble? And when will we see contactless payment for regular debit card EFTPOS? Still can't use contactless payment at most Dairy's and Takeaways etc; and this won't change until they can do it without being charged unnecessary merchant fees for having to use the VISA/MasterCard network.

I have been using the ANZ contactless payment since last year and you don't require to unlock the phone. It needs to be turned on but not required to be unlocked to work with paywave. More details here.

That will be the issue. Don't expext a bank to ever support a rooted device.
