Our old Victorian house has a cottage connected by 30m of underground copper cabling to the main house. We don't want to lose the working POTS telephone extensions in the cottage when the main house is connected by fibre to the UFB network.

Besides Spark, MyRepublic & WorldNet, does anyone know of other ISPs that provision voice on the Analogue Telephone Adapter (ATA) present on each ONT rather than on a modem?

I'd be particularly interested in hearing about ISPs that provide unlimited national calling (such as Flip - who don't offer fibre, unfortunately).

The houses are in Nelson.

You don't need voice to be provisioned on the ONT. As long as voice is provided out of a twisted pair outlet somewhere (ONT, router, or ATA), you can connect your cottage fine. Just plug the ONT, router or ATA back into a voice socket (making sure to disconnect the Chorus copper first) and that will liven up all the sockets in the house and cottage.

The only kind of voice services that won't work would be ones that are delivered over an app, such as Stuff.

Isn't there the $14 add-on from Spark that gives you unlimited nationwide calling.

Trustpower provision the ATA via the ONT. This is also then integrated into the Internal Wiring on install so you can continue to use your jack-points as you would on copper.

There isn't unlimited calling, but a National Landline Calling pack ($15.95 p/m) Or National/Australia Landline Calling Pack ($19.95 p/m) that is offered, both are capped at 1000 minutes per month.

Thanks for your prompt and helpful reply. I went with Voyager (who provision VOIP on the router) so I linked the ATA socket on there to a nearby phone socket and it worked a treat.

Now my problem is that I can only bar calls to numbers that are not in the South Island (ie not prefixed by 03) and that means that many calls that are chargeable (ie outside the Nelson local calling area) are still both possible and charged for.

Which good value ISPs do actually offer either free National calling (or just local free calling with an effective toll barring facility) ?

2degrees offer free national (non mobile) calling on their VoIP. $15 extra per month though I believe.

Indeed, that extra $15 per month gets you a VOIP line (that stops working in a power outage) and unlimited calls of up to one hour duration to landlines in New Zealand AND Australia.

That brings the total monthly payment to 2degrees to 95 +15 = $110 for unlimited 100/20 UFB and phone line - which is not bad value and what I need.

Unfortunately, their call barring is not comprehensive and exposes you to unforeseen bills if you have ignorant/forgetful guests...

Is there a predictable (ie with comprehensive call barring) unlimited UFB and phone line package available for less?

if you use the Fritzbox , you can block a individual phone number number from calling international numbers yourself, pretty easy. you can set it up when guests arrive remove when they go.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Is it the FRITZ!Box 7580 that costs about NZD500 you are writing about? (the comparison table at https://en.avm.de/products/comparing-avm-products/fritzbox/all-connections/ seems to indicate that the 7580 does not support fibre...)

Everyday National Calling is the plan, $14 indeed.

Weekend only is $4, Weekend only + mobiles is $14 too.

@vexxxboy would have been referring to the 7390/7490 which are a bit cheaper than the numbers you have listed.

Can't think of an ISP in nz who offer the 7580.

i was talking about the 7490 model, there's not much you cant do when it comes to setting up your voip service from only having your phone ring at a certain time of day , blocking international calls, blocking numbers. I even have mine set up as an alarm , it rings every week day to wake me up.
