I support a companies' Vodafone Business Internet connection.  Connection settings are to tag the WAN port traffic with a VLAN.  All outgoing traffic is tagged, but discovered none of the incoming traffic is tagged.  This seems very odd to me, and thought this would contravene some RFCs.

I'm running FibreX at home, and the connection needs to be tagged VLAN 10 or else there is no data flow.  I have found that none of the incoming traffic is tagged.

Is this normal/by design?

Are Vodafone playing by or with the rules?

Can a Spark or other ISP customer tell me what they're getting?

Cheers all.

I imagine they've probably done something to support legacy configurations with VLAN tagging on their products going forward, by sending traffic as untagged (which the WAN interface seems to handle just fine passing, which is something I'll have to look into, as it's outside my knowledge of VLANs), while accepting incoming traffic as both tagged and untagged.

You can do an experiment to see if I'm right by untagging your outgoing WAN traffic, and seeing if you still authenticate.

Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.

This challenges my knowledge of VLANs.  I would really like to know if this is a fudge that happens to work, or if it's within all of the IEEE RFCs.

On the business line, an unconfigured VLAN results in a flapping interface (helped from others with that diagnosis).

On the FibreX, I get the DHCP address but no web.

I've not heard of this happening with fibrex.

on chorus ufb, i have heard of this happening, generally in that case is it's been configured wrong and a simple reconfiguration on the far end.

I'd be logging straight back to vodafone.
