Hello all,

I've only been in the country since last July and I was looking to upgrade my computer.  Current Specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz LGA775
Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX 640mb
ABit IL9 Pro Motherboard
4gb DDR2 667 ram (Dual channel 2gbx2)
320gb WD Hard drive
Cheap as DVD reader/writer 32x
500w PSU Thermaltake I think
Steel Raidmax spiffy blue led tower with acrylic side window

I was trying to find the most ecnomically priced place to purchase my components from and zcom.co.nz is the best I can find.

What's the most economical place for me to buy computer components from?

have you looked on pricespy?

http://pricespy.co.nz

I've had good experiences with computer lounge, playtech, alphacity and aquilatech recently

Use pricespy.co.nz to compare prices. But remember the cheapest sellers often charge for shipping and a 2.5% credit card payment fee.

I use computerlounge.co.nz or playtech.co.nz  Shipping is free and there is no extra charge for credit card payments. I usually buy from them even when it is a little more expensive since their warranty & support services are brilliant.

Replace everything save the PS and case, maybe the graphics card is ok if you don't do any gaming or graphics work. Hard drive is fine as storage but won't be that fast.

Wouldn't it be better for them just to replace the whole box, and buy a new one, and keep that old one to use as either a backup, or a Media box. Otherwise they will either have to bin or sell those componets (for not much) or store them.

It'd be a lot easier and maybe cheaper to replace the whole thing.

Yeah, I'm planning on just getting all new and letting the wife use this one...as long as it browses the web and runs Sims 3 she's happy. (It does both of these sucessfully enough)

Computer Lounge seems like a good site.

Although Zcom seems to have the best prices I can see.

I personally don't like priceme or pricespy.

They have their value but I wouldn't ever completely rely on them.

I've used http://www.ascent.co.nz for many years, they've always been a good supplier for me, no problems with returns, repairs, etc. They're not the cheapest, but they're competitive, and shipping's included. You can get a small discount around 2% if you pay by bank deposit instead of credit card.

I'm not associated with ascent, just a happy customer. I occasionally use other stores as well, aquila for example.

You have the same tablet as me Laughing

I've had a look at http://www.ascent.co.nz and they appear to be extensively more expensive than other online retailers.

Ascent are often much the same price as other places once shipping's taken into account. Sometimes they're more expensive for individual things, that's when I go elsewhere.

My tablet's annoying me right now, the ICS upgrade means it reboots all the time. There's a firmware fix that should be available in a day or two that will at least partly fix it.

Ascent are good. Sometimes they are the cheapest, sometimes they aren't, but they always have good service.
I used pricespy last time to build my PC and found it good. Last time I used Alphacity and found them to be good and the cheapest at the time.

Personally, as far as online retailers go, I'd much prefer Ascent (& Nicegear - although not relevant is your case) over most other sites, the other sites either don't have what I want (such as Playtech) or make me uneasy for various reasons (claiming potential surcharges/CC fees (sometimes without disclosing actual amount until late in process), general perception, very new etc).

Ascent have been great, when I've had issues, they've helped sort them out, the only thing against, is that quite often their suppliers (even ones that seem to offer send by Courier Post or NZ Couriers) use NZ Couriers, who with Rural Delivery can present odd annoyances, (RAM left in unsecured letterbox along road for several days due to drop off after RD run before public holidays! for instance).

Which is why I'll spend a bit more and often just go to PB Tech, (where I'm about to go tomorrow to pickup parts for my new box), staff there have always been great to deal with for me, and I've never been unhappy with their service.  Their prices for combinations of items also seem to be very similar to some of the online-only shops too.  Main advantage there is you know you've got it in your hands!

+1 for Ascent service and an assurance of knowing you won't get screwed over if something goes wrong are worth paying for. However the other two places I buy from when not using Ascent is PB Tech or PConlineshop and not had any problems with any of the three with only one return to any of them with $1000's spent over the years.
