Im not sure if this topic has come up before (just found this site through a google search).
I recently brought my partner a new computer to play WoW on, it has decent specs
AMD 64 bit processor
Nvidia 6500 Vid card (i think)
512mb Ram

Im using XP and the new comp is running vista.

WoW runs fine on my computer but on my partners the framerates are really slow, there is a ton of lag and various other problems.

Is it just vista?
Do i need to upgrade the RAM
Do i need to "downgrade" to XP?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Reccomend 2GB Ram for Vista when wanting to use high end applications & games
If playing games that require low latency on internet, a good graphics card can take the load of other system processors. Motherboard, CPU, onboard Ethernet....

Also know many people who find Wireless connections terrible for playing WoW.

I had just purchased and installed and setup a new PC, super specs appart from the Video card. I decided I didn't need an amazing video card as long as I could run 2 screens & play WoW. Everything else is just office and desktop apps.

I have 2GB in my computer, Vista definatley runs HEAPS better with 2GB instead of 1GB. That Aero desktop theme sucks the life out of windows & the CPU.

I had a basic SAPPHIRE RADEON X1550 256MB DDR2 PCIE. This should have been enough. After first installing Windows Vista, & then WoW, everything went sweet. After installing other applications like MS Office 2007, some Macromedia products. It started to produce an unusual Jerky type Lagg.

I also had WinXP installed so, install WoW on this as well. Perfectly fine!!!

After much delegation decided to go out and buy a new Video Card. This time a SAPPHIRE RADEON X9650 512MB DDR2 PCIE
This went incredibly better on Vista, also the dual screen thing was a huge improvement.

Ill have to check out the option of upgrading the RAM.

Would it be worthwhile getting XP instead of vista?

Wow and Xp wouldn't be happy on 512 either. More ram is definitely the key to this, saves installing XP too ;)

I've run wow on an Vista machine with 1 gig, once loaded was fine but the machine gets a little bogged down.

Yea, I definatly found WoW worked a lot better on XP with 1GB ram vs 512MB
DDR2 Ram is super cheap atm, if your MB supports Dual Channel, check to see if you have 2 x 256MB, if so, sell em and get 2 x 1GB.

If it has 1x512MB, may as well just buy another 512MB. ADATA is still a good Memory generic brand.

But I still strongly reccomend 2GB for Vista =)

Thanks for all the input.

suppose ill go back to the shop and see what deal they can give me on an upgrade of RAM.

Really want to get this fixed cos my partner has just got addicted to wow after watching me play for a year, and has hijacked my computer till hers gets sorted lol

In hindsight i should have just got her comp built from scratch instead of going through a store.

sounds like RAM RAM and more RAM. if you get XP i actually do believe it could be a bit faster ... but you could say this is unfounded, but will still need 1g with XP to achieve this, although at least 2g with Vista, the more the merrier (due to the way vista operates).

I went out and got 1gb DDR2 Ram and wow runs fine.
