Have you confirmed that 2.4Ghz is switched on on your network adapter (and the router)?  What kind of network adapter are you using?

What channel is selected for 2.4Ghz?  Anything other than 1-11 and you'll have trouble with some devices.

At a guess..

Your router is probably set to auto and picking channel 13 because it's the least crowded.

Your devices probably aren't configured for NZ so are only using channels 1-11 (USA) rather than 1-13 (most of the world) so won't connect.

Nope. It is more probably that the ASUS N55U is just a crappy modem/router, or more exactly its firmware isn't up to scratch. I have one and it has exactly the same problem. It will connect perfectly well in 5 GHz but no matter what 2.4GHz channel you use it has a mind of its own whether it will connect or not. I have tried mine on auto and most of the different individual channels. And on multiple different devices. On top of that it drops the internet connection all the time requiring a reboot.
So just to cover a few bases;
Its firmware is up to date and has loaded twice followed by a hardware reboot.
It is connected to a master filter.
It is upstream of the house alarm.
It has an SNR of 13.
Wifi analyser shows no interfering channels.
Going on to the ASUS support site shows lots of people worldwide with the same problems using the N55U. The trouble isn't the hardware it is the half-baked firmware which seems to be a work in progress at ASUS. And only a junior coding team working on it at that. Between this and my TF101 Transformer which was rendered almost unusable by an ASUS firmware upgrade I won't buy another ASUS product.
Rant over, but I would suggest if your router is still within its return period you do so and say its not fit for purpose. Unfortunately mine is outside that period because I spent too long trying to get it working and now it has to go away to a service agent, who I can guarantee will find nothing wrong with it. Because there isn't anything wrong with the hardware.

Cheers guys this is sort of helpful!!!!
it is set to auto, i will try another channel, i have rebooted many times and have the latest firmware.
Not sure what a master filter is ? do you mean a phone line filter? if so yes.....
Its not sounding too good i feel its the crap firmware thats probably been written with a crayon!

Can't recommend the N55U because of (known) wifi and connection issues.

I will, in future, be sticking to the main network brands. I was using a Belkin Modem/Router which was almost faultless, but wanted Gigabit and 5 GHz, so took the shop 'expert's' recommendation of the N55U.

I have no experience with the Netgear unit you are looking at (communicated via pm).

Just as an update.
I have downloaded and installed new, but still beta firmware from the ASUS support site.
The current official firmware is 3.0.0.4.314.
The beta is 3.0.0.4.335.
It has only been installed for about 6 hours, but so far no internet disconnects and no 2.4GHz wifi dropouts either. I'll give it a couple of days, in particular the weekend when there are lots of users in the house, before I'll start to trust it....

So, as promised, an update on the beta firmware.
Since the update we have had NO problems at all. With either the internet connectivity or the 2.4GHz wifi. The 'net got a good thrashing with video and gaming as well as normal browsing. And although it may be placebo effect, the 2.4GHz signal, as measured by Android app WiFi Analyzer appears to be stronger in more parts of the house.
