As a user of Netflix USA I've been trying to find a nice solution that gives me the best of both worlds.
1. Fast connections to NZ for web browsing from desktop/laptops
2. VPN access to the USA for Netflix from IOS/XBOX360

I was looking at setting up a dedicated Linux machine and trying to do the routing but it just looked too difficult and required extra hardware running all the time.

This probably looks like a sales pitch, but honestly if your looking at doing something like this and your router will run DD-WRT or Tomato firmware then give this a try!

Astrill the VPN provider, have just released version 2.0 of there VPN app for DD-WRT/Tomato router firmware, which lets you configure which devices use the VPN connection through your router.

Looking good. Shame I tested Astrill and found out Amazon must have their IP addresses in a list somewhere, because every time I accessed Amazon through this service I got my account blocked and an email asking me to change password as "your account may have been hijacked". This doesn't happen with WiTopia access for example.

Nice. Have they added support for Tomato in this release? Only ever saw DD-WRT before in their VPN software.

Haven't had that problem, occasionally I get the Google warning that your account was accessed from another country. But that's what is happening when VPN'd into another country. Maybe Amazon have a similar security feature?
Anyway with the updated router app that will never happen as my PC's won't go over the VPN, only my media streaming devices.

Not sure when Tomato support was added (I just installed it on DD-WRT) but yes it's supports Tomato according to there tweet/announcement.

They have this old guide about how to setup Tomato using the firmware built in PPTP client but I'd ask there support how to install the specific app. shown in the screenshot.

I recently bought myself a Cisco WRT310n Wifi Router, Dumped the default firmware and installed DD-WRT vpn version.

Installing the Astril vpn software onto the router was really easy.

Here is my Astrill DD-WRT screen

1. Netflix streaming works really well via my PS3 or any other computer conencted to this router.
2. Just wish I could get Hulu working - Work in progress...

Good to see that they have added this. It took me ages to find the right commands to bypass the vpn by device. Needed to do this for the Tivo's, they did'nt like updating the epg via the states.

Just install their app on a pc and then there is a option in the app to load it onto your router. You can then uninstall the app from the pc if you want to.

Thats what I did. I dont have the option to route only certain IP addresses via the VPN.

WOuld love to hear if anybody else using DD-WRT has this functionality

I found some commands that allow you to bypass the vpn for certain ip's. I will post them tonight. Will also see if I can load the new version of Astrill.

The only thing you missing is that you not yet sitting in front of your TV enjoying Netflix....

Just make sure the router you buy is compatible with DD-WRT (Not the micro version, as it does not support openVPN). Your router will need at least 4MB flash memory, this is separate from the RAM. I made the mistake of buying a 2MB DD-WRT compatible router, installed the micro version and could not do the VPN part.

I have no experience with Tomoato, but can help you out if you have any questions relating to DD-WRT.

The other problem I am having as I am using my PS3 is that I now have to have 2 playstaion network profiles. I use the wired connection on the Ps3 for the VPN, and the wireless for standard gaming. It becomes a bit of a pain switching all the time.

Have not gotten Hulu+ to work as I am unable to register. But I can watch the standard stuff on my PC.

Im getting the same issue it only seems to install ver1.1 not ver 2 on my router. any pointers would be good.

I tried with the script and installing the latest client on my pc but still no joy

It looks like the upgrade is only available for beta testers at this stage. I have emailed them asking for access to it. I will post back how i get on
