Hi There!

A customer has purchased a Bose 535 system and wants to make her hundreds of CD's available through it, ideally through iTunes. She was told a NAS unit and we offer Synology units, which have a iTunes server on it. If she loads CD's onto the Synology, how would the Bose access that media?

Cheers

It looks like the 535 supports SoundTouch (whether you have to buy the adapter separately I'm not sure), which will allow it to connect to a wireless network and access shared media. I haven't used it with iTunes server before, but have with the likes of Pandora, and it works well. There should be a full SoundTouch guide on the Bose site to look through and see if it's gonna do exactly what you want.

I'd be pretty keen to know it works with iTunes before I suggested buying it. Anyone have any experience?

Yes, iTunes compatible

You can also use Audio Station (installable add on via Synology) and download DS Audio app to mobile/tablet and AirPlay audio to the Bose, assuming the Bose supports AirPlay

What I am trying to work out is how the Bose actually would interact with the Synology? Does the Synology advertise a service that the Bose understands or odes it use some form of proprietary function that I need to ensure the Synology is compatible with?

Last thing I want to do is sell her a Synology and find the Bose won't work with it.

Also when ripping CD's, how do you specify you want them to go to the Shared Server instead of local library or do you rip to local library and then move them in batches?

The Synology supports DLNA and iTunes media server which are standards of interoperability (regardless of the playback media device) - Not experience with the Bose, sounds (lol) like you need to investigate the Bose side rather than Synology

Got this from the Bose website:
Adding a music library to SoundTouch™

  • October 8, 2014
Information Article If you have music stored on a computer or network attached storage (NAS) drive, you can access that music through SoundTouch™:

  1. Open the SoundTouch™ app on a computer or smartphone
  2. Open on the "EXPLORE" handle to the right
  3. Choose "ADD MUSIC"
  4. Choose "Music Library"
  5. Click "ADD MUSIC LIBRARY"

Note: Only one music library is allowed per computer. If a library already exists for a computer from which you are trying to create a new library, select that computer's existing library and choose "REMOVE MUSIC LIBRARY" so the new library can be added
  6. Choose the type of library to be added by clicking the blue circle next to iTunes, Windows Media Player or NAS
  7. Enter a name for the library and click "ADD MUSIC LIBRARY"

Note: For iTunes and Windows Media Player libraries on your computer, the SoundTouch™ app will only find music stored in the computer's "iTunes Music" or "My Music" folders

I have not tried it myself, but Bose (in general) are pretty user friendly.

You could try getting hold of the Bose store (in Newmarket I think) and ask them?

edit: Oh, and the 535 does come with the SoundTouch adaptor.

Thanks for that. I am just testing some of this functionality related to the synology itunes server. One question .

How the flip do you get music from your computer, to the Synology Itunes Server Library? You can't in v12 just drag and drop and copy/paste doesn't work!

The Synology should create a music share, you can copy the albums to this root folder or create your own. You may need to check the permissions on that folder to allow yourself access...
If you check Control Panel/Media Library it will have details

So you can't just drag/drop in iTunes, or something similar?
