I looking at upgrading my existing Kindle to a Paperwhite 3. It is available at the $169 + delivery from Dick Smith

This model is Sponsored / Special Offer Edition. From what I understand it will include advertising from Amazon. Will this still occur using the device in NZ? From what I can see most 'shops' offer the ad free version but often don't state this, is this correct?

Yes it will still display the ads. I found them a pain in the butt as you had to touch the screen to dismiss them. However i just jumped online and talked to amazon who then removed them for me. So far they have done it on 2 devices for me no questions asked.

Did you need to give them a reason to stop the advertising?

I guess that if you read in flight mode you also won't see any ads?

I have actually found the ads pretty minor, but I have also found a lot of good books to read. Amazon have removed the ads from my previously purchased ones at my request, but I won't do this again as I have gotten a few decent deals too.

At the end of the days it's cheaper because of the ads.

Curious why bother with Dick Smith (which is not DSE anyway) and not buy the Kindle from Amazon (Geekzone aff link)? The price converts to almost the same, and still have to add shipping, like the Dick Smith one. Is there much difference in shipping?

I have not looked at the DSE shipping price but I have always found the Amazon shipping price to be excessive, how have you found their shipping cost?

I get about $215 NZD delivered to NZ direct from Amazon vs $178 NZD from Dick Smith. It would appear the DSE offer is a good deal. The caveat with this of course is having to deal with Dick Smith.

I would rather deal with Amazon.

Amazon shipping prices have dropped a lot in the past year or three. US$8 shipping from the US to NZ is fairly standard for average sized packages that aren't heavy - cheaper than sending something from Wellington to Auckland.

I'd buy either high street retailer (CGA and local support) or Amazon (dealing directly with manufacturer)... Without naming names, buying from an on-line only Australian retailer doesn't inspire me much confidence.

I just got mine last week from Mightyape. I had originally purchased a Kobo Aura 2, which died in 6 days. They had the Paperwhite (with no ads) for the same price, so I asked them to do a refund on the Kobo, and picked up the Kindle. I've never had any issues with MA in the past, so hopefully I won't suddenly hear horror stories about them.
