It turns out Lutron makes a very nice IR-based ceiling fan/light control unit (Maestro IR MIR-LFQ35).  I would like to use this to 'control' my ceiling fan/light with my home-automation system (Vantage Controls).  The HA system is capable of sending the IR commands on an emitter.  While I could stick and IR emitter to the outside of the Lutron wall switch over the red IR-receiver bar it would look pretty ugly.

I disassembled the lutron control and am wondering if it would work for me to cut off the 'emitter' and simply solder the two wires from my IR emitter cable onto the same two leads that go to the IR receiver on the Lutron circuit board.  Is this crazy?  Can you bypass the 'IR' part all together to make a hard-wired remote?
