Hi there,

My sister in law recently had SS UFB installed. the ONT and the Router are about 1m away from the head of the bed in the main bedroom (not ideal!). This has resulted in poor wifi to the rest of the house because of the location of the router. I notice that the phone jack is connected to the router meaning If they wanted to shift the router more centrally, they would need to get a phone cord extension. My UFB install has the phone plugged directly into the ONT, not the router.

Is it possible to connect the phone to the ONT in my sister in laws case?

Next to the ONT, there's a new phone jack and two wires (blue/white) feeding to/from the old style phone jack right next to it (presume this is why the ONT is where it is and presume this is the wiring that livens up the old copper jacks.).

Hopefully, I've explained myself well enough. I can't help feeling this install wasn't planned very well :) (not SS's fault)

Your phone company has chosen to deliver phone services over the ONT, while Slingshot has chosen to use the router.

This decision is fixed and cannot be changed unless your sister in law changes phone company. She will need to keep the phone plugged into the router to keep it working.

Different voice products used by different ISPs use either the RGW or ONT. Spark use the ONT, SS use the RGW.

That new phone jack will be to back feed the phones.

If you want to use the ONT for phone (which IMO is the better product...)

Spark, Compass, Myrepublic (please dont!), Trustpower, Worldnet all do it via the ONT.

Very simple reasoning really..

Troubleshooting and end to end management.

Finally... no fingers poking in holes...

I'm not saying over a RGW will be trash, there is just so many more variables. on the flipside, RGW allow a RSP to do fancy things with their codecs etc.. but this will always be a gimmick, till interconnects actually transverse voice in a far less arcadic way..

As a Consumer, your benefits are simple. as this thread already indicates.

You can move the modem without having to think about landline.
In a power outage situation, only the ONT needs to be powered for voice
Less wires to confuse
Easier to use - particularly important for older generations (installation includes connecting the ONT to house wiring so it's transparent)
It just works.

Thanks for the feedback everyone :)

I had a feeling this was a one or the other situation. I guess I will have to think about ways to boost the wireless (probably a network cable to the old ADSL router and use the wireless on that). First world problems.

I've been with MR since we first got gigatown, i don't have many complaints (besides speeds being a bit on the low side recently, within the MR network).

Fully agree. For the odd residential job we do, ONT provided voice makes things so much simpler for both us and the customer. The amount of times I've had someone on DSL plug the line into the ATA and their phone in to the DSL port...

we really need to start coloring it like black for DSL and White for phone or something...

hopefully that will avoid said issue...

One thing i've gotta ask though... why do people assume with technology if it goes in the hole, it's the right place? Pretty sure that doesn't often apply elsewhere......
