Hi,

My brother-in-law has just moved to NZ and has just got broadband and phone with Orcon. From what I understand he's on the basic Orcon@Home 5GB package.

He tells me his phone plugs into his router, so I'm assuming his phone line is therefore SIP. I had hoped to be able to call him by SIP URI (therefore bypassing the PSTN network), but I've tried using the SIP URI <accountnumber>@sip.orcon.net.nz where <accountnumber> is his Orcon account number. I've also tried using his phone number, but in all cases this fails.

Do Orcon permit incoming calls by SIP URI? If so what am I doing wrong?

If they don't is there anything stopping us using a SPA3102 ATA or an IP phone and signing up with another VoIP provider who does? Really just checking that Orcon don't block the use of other SIP services on their network.

Also are there any NZ VoIP providers who offer a free Auckland DID? Everyone I've found wants to charge you for it.

Thanks in advance.

Robert

It would really surprise me if Orcon allowed inbound SIP URI calling due to the significant risks associated with this these days. There is nothing to stop you putting another SIP device behind the Genius, however you may need to disable the SIP ALG, something that is discussed in a couple of recent threads on here.

Lastly I'm not aware of anybody offering free numbers in NZ. Why? Quite simply because numbers cost money, somebody ultimately has to pay for them.

The phone plugged into the router is not a sip phone as such. You are unable to talk sip directly to the genius device.

The only way is to dial his phone number.

Thanks for the answers.

Not the outcome I was hoping for though :( I might have to configure him an ATA and post to him.

As for the DID, here in the UK you can easily get a DID for free and Sipgate will give you a true geographic DID for free ;)

Just on that note someone was asking about SIP URI calling the other day (they are on OpenVFX). How common place is it for VOIP providers to support this?

I have SIP accounts with voipfone, sipgate, gradwell, fastvoip, smslisto/voipstunt (both Betamax resellers) and voxalot. All of these support dialling a SIP URI. Sipgate do however block inbound SIP URI calls from most other providers.
