Hello,

Now I can no longer get Aurora I have a 90cm dish in Southland sitting there going to waste. What is the best thing to point it at and how to I go about doing this myself as being in a rural location I can't afford to get someone out to do it for me, it cost me over $600 to get someone out here to line it up in the first place when I got it installed. Almost 300 of that was for travel.

I've heard a lot of people talk about D2 being a good choice, is this the case and of course is it my best option?

Is there likely to be something appear on the empty space on C1 meaning if I just wait I won't need to adjust my dish? I'm rather scared of moving it thinking I'll never get it lined up again.

Any help appreciated.

Optus D2 is a good option. There are now several channels in english that are well worth watching. My favourite is The Ovation Channel from Australia which has a great selection of music. Also worth watching is RT
(english) news and iFilm (Iranian films) to name a few.

Well i've tried for 3 hours now to move onto d2 but just can't find it, I managed to find d3 for a while, from what I can see I should only need to move my dish a few cm's further out to get D2 but it doesn't seem to work that way, all I have to go with to find it is my set top box doing scans too.

Any help appreciated

ok found D2 but only some of the channels are showing, i'm missing RT news for example... doesnt show in a blind scan even, some channels are perfect picture, unfortunately all foreign channels by the look of it and a few religious channels, ovation and rt both don't work, ovation scans but only has sound, no video.

D2 needs a slight LNB rotation also (think tilting your head/dish on a celestrial arc east/west while facing north)

Thanks for the advice, I now have D2 working, well most channels seem to work, i'm only 54% strength on a 90cm dish, the only problem I can see is I have ovation in my blind scan twice, both have audio but no picture. RT News is working a treat which is the one I wanted the most I guess.

It seems all the other channels are in another language or are religious which isn't much good for me.

Hopefully I can sort out this ovation issue. - sorted turns out its in mpeg4 and my set top box can only do mpeg2 I guess seeing it gets no picture.

I discovered News TV which seems to be Press TV, it seems ok

Hi, I'm a few days late reading your post, so you seem to have it sorted. I have a further suggestion.

If your first dish is pointed at D1, you can buy a $25 bracket for it and fit a second Ku band LNB alongside the D1 LNB, and you will be able to also receive IS19, as that is only six degrees away from D1.

IS19 has 14 TV channels, with two decent English-language channels - EuroNews, and South Korea's Airirang TV.

Regrading Press TV (aka NewsTV) on D2, that is run by the Iranian Government and it has become so extremist that the UK broadcasting regulator has cancelled its license to broadcast on the BSkyB platform.

I am very interested in doing that, so I would just need one of the brackets that adds a second lnb and ad a second lnb? I still have a second dish pointed at D1 so I would add the bracket to that one. The one on D2 I had installed just for C1 when I was able to use aurora.

I assume I can't use the same cable running into the house, I would need to put in another one

Euronews sounds excellent and Arirang sounds good too, I mainly only ever watch documentaries and news anyway so these 2 channels would be perfect, problem as good if not better than the D2 i'm not on with my 2nd dish.

I know very little about these satellite stuff so the more info the better. I wouldn't need to adjust my d1 dish by the sounds of it, just put on the bracket for the 2nd lnb?

Hi yes, you seem to be on to it . I have two 90cm dishes, each with two LNB's. One dish points at D1 and IS19 and the second dish is pointed at C1 and D2. Of course C1 Aurora is dead now. All four LNB's have two metre coax which each connect to a $15 four-way splitter, similar to those pictured here.

And from that splitter there is a single cable to my receiver.

It is actually possible to have D1, D2 and IS19 all on the one 90cm dish, and it's nicely described here with a useful photo of the setup:

But if you have two dishes then my advice is to use them both so you can maximise your received signal strength. When I had just one dish I had D1, D2 and C1 all on the one dish but it was a compromise with the dish looking across 8 degrees (from D2 at 152 degrees, C1 at 156 degrees and D1 at 160 degrees). If it rained heavily, I lost C1.

IS19 is at 166 degrees so you would put that with D1 (160 degrees) on the one dish, and have D2 on its own dish at 152 degrees.

It's less stressful for you in aligning everything up if you can spread D1 + IS19 and D2 over two dishes, and it will give you a stronger signal.

Thanks for all the advice, sounds brilliant. Do those multi LNB brackets come pre-configured already lined up or do you have to align them to the satellites you wish to get? I would love to get one that I can just drop on my D2 aligned 90cm to easily allow me to get that Euronews :)

I stumbed across D3 when I was moving my dish around to find D2 but could only find some test signal on it.

That splitter seems a great idea, I'll go with one of those as I could use it to get TV in another room also as at the moment it's just in my lounge room.

The brackets are not preset but really all you have to do is clampp it to the throat of existing D1 LNB and then attach the second LNB for IS19, and adjust its skew to receive a signal.

The picture on the Freeview shop link in my earlier post is a good picture of the skew for IS19 - about set at 8 O'clock position (varies a little depending on your location in NZ). If you are unhappy with the signal quality you might want to adjust the dish but that may affect your D1 signal, it's really trial and error, and compromise.

The only issue to be aware of is that the throat of your LNB needs to be long enough to accept two collars - the collar that attaches it already to the dish, and the collar of the bracket that holds the new second LNB.

The splitter I mentioned does allow you to have multiple satellites connected to it with a single cable to your receiver but it does not allow for the signal to be to fed to a second TV. You can run a cable from the first receiver's "Loop out" socket to a second receiver's "sat in" socket but it is far from satisfactory because on the second receiver you will only be able to view whatever satellite the first receiver is showing, and then only if the first receiver is switched on and powering the relevant LNB.

There are switches that will allow you to watch different satellites on different TV's at the same time but they are not that cheap. Instead you could buy an LNB with dual outputs and run a cable from each output to each TV. Search Trade me for "Dual LNB". Of course you would need three of these - one for each of the satellites you are interested in. They range in price on Trade Me from $10-$50 each. Someone on the forum might be able to suggest a cheap switch to allow multiple TV's to watch multiple satellites, or maybe search the Deal Extreme website in Hong Kong as their prices are considerably cheaper then in NZ and they offer free shipping, and have an excellent reputation.

Thanks for all of the assistance, it's very much appreciated. It looks like I have a mission ahead of me :)

I'm in Northern Southland, So I'd assume my alignment of the LNB would be different to the picture as that was most likely Auckland but I can use it as a guide.

Thanks for the tip about Dead Extreme, I've only used Chinebuye before and they have been great but they don't carry satellite stuff so DX it is.
