Well this is my first post so please go easy on me,

I have recently moved into a new house and have had sky installed. I have jusr brought a new LCD TV to go in my bedroom. The house does not have an Areial just the sky dish that has been installed. I have looked at getting Freeview installed but does not come that cheap. I see that Sky offer to instal a new outlet in another room so that you can move your sky decoder from one room to another, what I would like to know could I get Sky to install this and then connect a Free View Decoder to this outlet and run it the same time off the sky dish?

So I assume you would be paying SKy even though you have Freeview? Depending on where you live you could easily get Freeview|HD - which is the terrestrial version, with HD.

Decoders should be in store from the 3rd April, and if live in a good reception area you could even use an internal aerial - I live in Johnsonville and use a small aerial behind my TV to get the signal from Mt Kaukau - reported as 100% signal here.

Hi Greg, yes you could get a Sky tech back and pay him to add a splitter and feed and you then purchase a FreeView satellite box, I suggest you dont go through sky for this, just ring a local Sky directly or indenpendant antenna installer in your area. FTA satellite boxs can be purchased at places like freeviewshop for as little as $165, these arent certified, which is actually a good thing.

Technically, well legally really, non Sky antenna installers are not meant to touch any part of a Sky install. However Sky have indicated that they wont get upset by this if you want to add a freeview box to their dish, however if the installer or home owner stuffs up and stops the sky box from working then the owner will be paying full cost to have it corrected. That said any compentent antenna installer would have to be way out of it to stuff such an install up.

Other option as Mauricio says, if you live in a prime DTT coverage area you could get a DVB-T box, currently they start at around $400, plus you may need an antenna depending on your reception.

You could probably almost get freeview through your toaster at that proximity - its a pretty impressive ariel that one

True, true. I am just using the freebie aerial that came with my Hauppage WinTV HVR900 USB receiver and it shows 100% here. I wonder if we are being cooked too, with all those waves...

Thanks guys for your help, I am in Auckland and still not 100% sure what I want to do is correct.

Sky offers to intall another plug into your house so that you can move the decoder from one room to another for $80 which seems cheap to get this installed, hmm maybe I might be wrong?

I am guessing once this is installed then I am able to plug in a freeview set top box and get Freeview off the sky dish?

Am I correct?

Yes what you want to do (add another point so you move the decoder from one room to another) is a service Sky provides, $89.95 is not unreasonable for this. Sky will not care (well they probably do but they have stated they will not make an issue of it) if you end up actually connecting a FTA/FreeView box to the connection.

An obvious extention of this setup is that you actually run two cables or use a pair of diplexers, with this you can run both the satellite feed to a FTA/FreeView box in the bedroom and also an RF out feed from the sky box to the bedroom TV so you can have both the FTA and whatever the sky box is turned to in the bedroom.

Absolutly correct. I've never asked around but $80 seems reasonable.
