Hey my learned friends.

I used to use a program called DVREdit to crop adverts and the like out of Windows MCE DVR-MS files, mainly as a method of freeing up disk space (the adverts can add 25-30% to a file).

Does anyone have an opinion of a tool, preferably freeware, that will allow me to edit the h.264 .TS files from Freeview?

Wow - 59 views overnight. That to me says there were plenty of people also hoping to find an answer.

Sorry guys and gals, I'm still stumped and have yet to find a viable solution for editing .TS files.

i think your problem is there is no answer (yet). If anyone can find this out, i'm sure they'd have a few beers owing to them.

I know of at least 4 or 5 people that have spent a considerable amount of time on this for no real result.

I'm sure I could transcode to mpeg and do it that way, but it seems like such a fag.

There was a post on using Windows Movie Maker for it, but I've never suceeded - in fact WMM just dies the moment I try.

Ah well the hunt continues.

yes, especially as it defeats the entire purpose of recording them in HD. You really want to edit the .ts as it is

The Satellite TS files are easy enough using Video Redo. The HD Freeview one's though are a pain. Video Redo are working on an enhancement to allow editing of H264 based TS files, but for now, the only option I have seen was described in another thread somewhere on this site. This method uses Vista's Movie Editor which worked for me (of sorts) - but was not really a good outcome.

No opinion, but have you tried the app available through this site? http://www.videohelp.com/tools/TS_Packet_Editor

It's advertised as freeware but there is warning attached that it'll install "annoying advertising products (browser popups etc)" which may not be to your (or your anti-spywares') liking...

I am also still waiting for a method to convert .ts files into a format suitable for editing. My preference would be to get the file transcoded to an .avi so I can use virtualdub to edit it.

I have had limited success changing the priority of various directshow filters so that I can now actually double click a .ts file and media player will open and play the file correctly. However if I try to convert the file using Windows Movie Maker it fails - sigh. This is a pity since there is a plug-in for virtualdub that allows you to directly open windows media encoded files.

I am hoping the changes to handbrake which are currently being worked on will result in a way to automate conversion and editing of recordings.

I am concerned about errors in the datastream however. What I mean is that I can have a recording which the picture will periodically break up for a second or so. Thus I am assuming that it is an error in the data stream that is causing it. MediaPortal seems to ignore these 'errors' and recover gracefully however when I have tried to convert the ts files using various free tools on the internet they all seem to choke on these errors.

Now that TV3 includes an AC3 soundtrack I might have another try with tools like mencoder to see if that could work.

Have you tried or heard of Super C? I use the freeware for encoding .AVI's for my PS3 & .ASF's for my Lyra Jukebox. The garb direct from their website:

I have found only one program which can cut the h264 ts files and keep them as a ts and its called...........
H264TS Cutter which you can find here -> [url]http://www.h264tscutter.de/show_artikel.php?id=5[/url]
After cutting I use DGAVCIndex to demux the audio and then run that trhough winamp's fileoutput plugin to get a wav file.
For encoding I use AviSynth and DirectShowSource to get the video into virtualdubmod.

Pc User mag had a program called streamline to convert MCE .ts files to Mpeg2, Mpg4, avi, wmv and the likes. I use it, it works well, and is quite quick. Not sure if it's on their website, or just the dvd that came with the issue. Don't know if it supports H.264, but it's an Aussie mag and program written by one of their staff, so it may

Powercinema 5.1 manual includes references to Editing of the recorded files, automatically deleting the ads and recording directly onto disc. However, the software supplied to NZ does not have the above features available. I suppose it is just a marketing stunt, as many people try to read the manual first before deciding to get the product.

That says to me that every post hitting the front page of New Zealands # 1 technology site by total traffic is guaranteed views whether the topic is of interest or not :-P

Do you edit the ads out manually? I think I would rather just buy more hard drives :)

I tried the program 'SUPER' mentioned in a previous post (after downloading it which was a mission in of itself).

Most combinations seemed to cause crashes, however I did get some limited success with the following configuration.

My output was set to AVI and DIVX. The audio can either be MP3 or use direct stream copy.

The main thing is to select ffmpeg as the tool for conversion and click the button to use DirectShow (since I am able to play .ts files in Media Player).

Then I specified NoChange for the video size and 50 FPS for the speed. I selected a bitrate of aprox 2000Kbs.

As mentioned before for audio you can either select stream copy or not.

Then I dropped a .ts of dexter from TV3 (1080i 50FPS, AAC & AC3 audio) and began the Encode.

Generally this configuration works, however it does sometimes crash - even with the same source file. Even though the original size is 1920x1080 it created a file that was 720x576 which was horizontally squished (basically anamorphic).

If I specified an output size like 1280x720 it did give me that resolution, but it had the appearance of video that had been squished down to 720x576 and then resized back up to 1280x720.

My guess is the tool has some kind of limitation about the resolution - maybe PAL resolution is hardcoded - I don't know.

Still it's the closest I've come so far to being able to convert video to other formats so thanks for pointing out the tool.

btw I've noticed that any tools that use the x264 free decoder seem to fail/crash with NZ freeview tv. This decoder is used widely (ffdshow, mencoder, ffmpeg, handbrake etc) so until the x264 codebase is updated to support NZ's files then most free tools are going to fail. The only reason it worked for me in this instance was because it was using the Cyberlink codec via DirectShow.

For some films and doco's I want to retain - yeah I tended to edit out the ads, strip the pre &post record buffers and so on. You are of course right in the more disk space would also provide a solution, but that also means more power consumption of archiving things offline.

Still looking for that .TS equiv of DVREdit though
