Hi everyone,

This is the first time i've tried to get FreeviewHD working on my Sony Bravia 46" KDL-46W5500 TV and for some reason it's not working ... presumably because of the signal. My TV has a built in tuner.

I've just moved to Mount Eden in Auckland and i've had no luck getting the signals, probably because I don't have a UHF Aerial on my roof? I have no idea what's up there, there could be a sky dish or just a normal VHF antenna but i can't see anything.

There is however a white TV Aerial Jack/Input on the skirting boards inside that i have plugged my TV into but as i said before no signal there. I then proceeded to buy an Indoor UHF/VHF Amplifier TV Antenna but there is no improvement there either, and get's worse reception on 1 2 and 3 than plugging it into the jack.

Is there something i'm not doing on my TV right? Should i be using the Digital or Analogue TV option?
The Digital brings me back no signal at all and won't scan and find anything, and the Analogue just seems to find 1, 2, 3 and TV 4. Prime is pretty awful.

My thoughts is that i need to get a Proper UHF Aerial on my roof, but before i go out and get one installed, is there something i'm not doing on my TV?

If your Prime reception is pretty awful, this indicates you have a weak UHF signal - probably too weak for FreeviewHD. Otherwise the channels should show up on a scan of the digital tv channels. First things first, I recommend taking a good look at the aerial on your roof. If it is not capable of UHF, that's the issue. If there is a reasonable antenna then you need to somehow trace your cables back to see whether the sockets are actually are connected to it.

Other factors that spring to mind are bad antenna alignment or low-grade cabling. Both of which were issues when I moved into my current place and a visit from the antenna guy fixed the reception for both analog and digital so they are now crystal clear (something I thought was impossible on an analog signal and living in Karori!).

Prime being pretty awful is an indication that you have a stuffed/non existint UHF aerial.
1-2-3-4 are on VHF for most of Auckland

Ok so i need to use the Digital TV channel option.

Yeah i honestly don't know what's on my roof. I can't see anything from the street or standing outside. I live in a 1 bedroom unit which is in a block of 3 units. I can see a sky dish on my neighbours roof but i can't see anything on mine.

I wonder if that aerial jack inside my house could be wired up to my neighbours dish, being that it's a block of units? I guess i could ask my landlord about that.

If it's not wired to the dish then i guess there is some kind of UHF aerial that is maybe just stuffed as you say or not aligned since it's getting a weak Prime signal.

I need to get a better look or find out what's up there.

Bit pissed that i spent $50 on an indoor antenna and it doesn't give me anything either, which is why i thought i wasn't doing it right on the TV!
