I am keen to watch BBC tv which I understand is on Intelsat 5.
I have a spare 60cm dish and was wondering if I got the correct lnb, would I be able to receive it.
I am a newbie to the world of satellite tv, other than freeview.

Cband, So you need a honking great LNB and most likely a 90cm dish.

But it can be done

A 60cm dish will have a Ku LNB but you'll need a C band LNB for Intelsat 5. 60cm is too small for C band too.

A second Ku band LNB could be added to a dish for picking up Optus D2.

I hesitated for months, but I finally decided to take the risk and installed a 90cm dish, BBC and Australia Network are working fine, 65% - 75% signal at all times... funny enough, the signal appears not to be bothered by clouds / day or night / rain, like the Ku band. I have on the same 90cm dish a C band LNB for BBC, and 2x Ku LNBs for Freeview and the other Optus.

SBS One and SBS Two work only now and then, usually with very low signal (25% - 30%) and only if there is clear sky. Maybe there is more fine tuning to be done, but I will not go again through the trouble to adjust the dish (it is on the top of a wooden post approx 7m off the ground (4m above a deck which is 3m into the air... not easy to work there).

Thanks for that. Looks like 60cm might be too small. How much was the lnb for c band?

90cm is the minimum for this.
The C band LNB I got off TradeMe, it was more than a year ago but I recall $70 - $75 including the conical feedhorn... back then I found some tutorials about how to build your own feedhorn if you wish, but I did not try it (cardboard and aluminium foil).

This is not quite correct, IS5 can be received very well using an 85cm dish. the required Signal strength to lock on to 4160 is approx 5.2dB .The received signal on an 85cmmated with a 13k and conical horn is over 7.5db nearly 8db. The 85cm/13k is actually as good as a 90cm /15k.

As there is little or no rain fade you dont need any rain fade margin. Yes Optus D1 can be added to the unit and we have no problems obtaining 14dB on 12456 and 10 to 11 Db on 12646 SBS .
