Hello I am new to the forums and website development...

I searched a bit on forums but could not find what I was searching for

What I am trying to do is update a website, but I do not want to make any changes go live yet...

What is the best solution to do this?

Buy a temporary website domain just to develop it?

How about a sub domain on the main domain so there is no additional cost ?

ie. dev.domain.co.nz

Cheers

always use a subdomain, sometimes even simply a subdirectory assuming all links are relational.

often ill use a local server for testing too, simply to cut out the whole uploading step.

currently moving all my hosting to a VPS, along with taking my own steps to optimize each process to run everything.. running this on a subdomain rather than going all out, yep phps up change nameservers and zone files straight away, has been immensely important.

Just use a local server. With local servers you can go as far as spoofing your domain name on the server so that when you go to yourdomain.com instead of taking you to the real website it'll take you to the local server.
