I am looking for a reasonably priced, preferably NZ-based, company that offers around 100GB of storage. I want to use it for off-site backup with access through FTP.

I know that there are a lot of US based sites but they all seem to have terrible Customer Service.

Any ideas?

Servers located in APAC cost more, because the hosting costs them more. I personally use Server Complete. Here is a discount you can use. $12 USD for 125GB rsync & sftp access is available.

I might add that I've only rarely needed support but its been good so far.

You may be better of to colo a server yourself if having a NZ based server is so important. It will probably be cheaper as well.

100GB of storage?!

That's quite a big bandwidth cost as well don't you think. I swap external backup drives with work, so I know I have a backup at home, and a backup at work. I come to work everyday, so there are no issues with collecting it.

Shop around, most places require you to contact them for a quote.

Hmmm, do you get free National traffic which makes it worth having your online storage in NZ? or would it just be easier as the otehrs say and going through AU/US?

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

Only advantage I can see for using NZ/AUS based online backup is speed of Upload/Download. (doesn't have to go very far)

Although your local speed is also a contributing factor, and upload is normally half your download. That is based by your ISP speeds (account).

New Zealand is so clover, by not discounting National Online Traffic, more people are encouraged to take their online needs off-shore where there are more competitive rates. Bravo. I do.

Yeah, only offering free local and not national :(

Even if you say live in Wellington and get storage through Telstra or Silverstripe(wellington based) it counts as National traffic :(
or if you want to share data between a friend down the road, still National traffic. Probably because it hops through a few national hops, before going back to your friend

Should start a petition for free national data :) then no more of this monopoly with things like:
The new TV only available with free data = Telecom
TVNZ on demand only available free data = Orcon(sorry accidentally wrote telstra)
Free webcams round Wellington with live streaming = Telstra
Gameplanet = xnet etc, although i do use this one, being a gamer :)

I am with Telstra & didnt know that. Great news, cos I watch heaps of On Demand.

Paradise used to do National traffic / 10.
So 100 MB was counted as 10MB. That is what all ISPs should be working towards.
International traffic was 100MB = 100MB

I think asking for FREE national traffic is a bit much, but I do beleive they could drop it to at least half or international. Even for hosting companies and resellers. This would benefit so many more Kiwi businesses who only deal with 70%+ National traffic. But find hosting their websites overseas cheaper, and better.

The good old paradise days, they had some good options at the time vs other companies. I reckon that 10/100 arrangement would be ideal for most people.

I'm not sure if you've checked plan-b.co.nz out, I do a fair bit of work with them and they are great to deal with. I've got no idea what their online backup pricing is though as I don't use that service.

That's one lame thing about the NZ companies who are offering online backup services most don't list any pricing. I'd be surprised if you found anyone in NZ that would host 100GB locally for less than $1-2 per GB per month.

Having said that...
