Just got a Samsung Galaxy Mini, so far everything is all good except the apps. When I go to sign in with my Google account it says "communicating with the server" for a minute or two, then says no connection could be established.

Internet browser is working fine, but no luck with Gmail and App marketplace.

If it's 3G then the problem might be the access point in use. It's common to find 3 access points defined: one for MMS, one for web/WAP, and one for open internet usage. You'll need to use the open internet usage access point if you want all of your apps to be able to use mobile data.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Mini too and I have found that sometimes it is easier to set up your Gmail and app Store preferences online first. Then access them with the phone.
Sometimes it is easier to do these set ups with your computer. Google Play gives you the opportunity to "name" each of your devices, so that you can customise which apps are on each device.
