My father-in-law will very soon be moving into a rest home, and is able to have Sky installed there.  He is currently a subscriber, but we were wanting to take advantage of this great deal (he's only interested in sports, and his TV doesn't support FullHD, so the $39 package would be best.  Does anyone know if it's possible for us to cancel his existing subscription, and for us to then subscribe using this deal (and we would pay for it), but have it installed at the rest home?

That should be no problem.

I believe you could also just order a $25/mo multiroom decoder for yourself and install it at the rest home - that's what a lot of people do for their beach house decoder. I doubt Sky would approve of that though.

Thanks for that.  I have no interest in Sky, and don't want it installed at our house, so we'd just get it installed at the rest home but under our name.

You will have to cancel the current contract and give his decoder back, but I am assuming that is under his name. So, if the new contract is under your name, and you are not currently a subscriber, then you can just ring the telemarketers number (anytime after mid day) and order the new service.

0800 4 SKY TV (0800 475 988)

Important note: This is a telemarketing company, not Sky's regular consumer line

Sky are going to have to sweeten their deals a bit more:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/industries/96015124/sky-tv-loses-33880-satellite-subscribers

Looks like they are sliding down a spiral, doesn't it?

I wonder if they'll just be in denial until it's too late, or will they actually sharpen their deals/offerings.

I am happy with the offer I got from reading this thread, but I will be cancelling after christmas (before my year is up). I may (or may not) rejoing next winter for the Rugby. I understand that the deal I have is probably not making Sky any money ($49 for MySkyHD+, Sport, HD Ticket), but that is a price I am happy with.

WHy do they need to charge for the HD ticket? Why so much for the MySky? There are two easy places for them to start.

"While now is not the time for a massive conversion of our core business, as a significant number of our customers still rely on our satellite-delivered service for their sports, news and entertainment, we are embracing the opportunity to compete in new media models."

Not so long ago I would give Sky some money every so often for their Fanpass service. Since they comprehensively wrecked that service they now get exactly zero income from me, well done sky you are really embracing the opportunity.

They're in a bind. Their business model is still basically stuck where they were decades ago - providing subscription TV. Google are no longer just a search engine and Amazon are no longer a simple online book store. They keep adapting and evolving. But Sky are stuck, a one trick pony offering their monopoly rugby product that keeps their life support switched on. Having a satellite based delivery service and exclusive rights to the rugby aren't enough.

They had an inkling of opportunity with the Vodafone merger but when that got knocked back I think that started the countdown timer...

Obviously I am well aware they wrecked Fanpass to stop people bleeding off the crappy satellite service onto a Fanpass/Netflix streaming solution. Talk about cut your nose off to spite your face.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

I'm with Sky through one of the deals on this site. Only signed up recently so still have 10 months to run on this subscription. I doubt I'll renew as with the rate of pace of streaming alternatives I don't think they'll have a unique offering in a year's time. The only content that I'll be missing is the golf coverage. Sky currently provide an excellent service for golf fans with live coverage across the 3 main tours (PGA, European Tour & LPGA) often simultaneously across their Pop-up channels. I know this isn't important to everyone but it is to me and I'll need to find an alternative before I drop the service.

Fanpass isn't wrecked, sports cost. Get NF to add them all for another $2 per month

Crappy satellite? You haven't used it. Its extremely reliable, everyone knows that.

How can they embrace the opportunity? Factor in the Optus contract if and when you reply.

Are you kidding? A decent storm and it's out. Fibre eats it alive without the need of the ugly, outdated non-UHD non HDMI-CEC decoder.

The Optus contract is part of their problem. Why bother when you can deliver over fibre (or VDSL)

Sky should have seen this coming and started up their own internet business about a decade ago.

A decade ago people in NZ would not take up SVOD full time. If they dumped satellite then, no subscribers, then a slow take up of this new fandangled idea. And BB wasnt the VDSL/Fibre coverage that it is now.

The Optus contract is certainly their problem, it expires I think 2018. So far thy have developed SVOD for when they can satellite, and go SVOD only. Unless they get a really good deal on Optus as its already been fully amortized. The only choice is bite the bullet till then. Or they could have halved prices, but if that was a better option to retain subscribers they would have done that

As to satellite, its 99.99% reliable for me, everything just works. I cant recall the last rain fade I got.

UHD? True. But at 1080i on my Plasma, its excellent

Not suggesting they dump satellite a decade ago, but they should have started planning for it a decade ago. They didn't and now they are floundering and being left in the dust by the streaming services.
