At the risk of opening myself to another boots on assault, it might be worth looking at a ban or tax or at least restriction on fast food advertising. Education can also include reducing the amount of motivational propaganda people are subjected to.

With discussions like this with you, it feels like 1 step forwards and one step backward. People have made many good suggestions, which you have agreed to with a varying degree of reluctant ness, but then 6 pages on, you are back to taxing, which has been proven to be less effective than many other things like education.

How do you administer a tax? How is it policed? What if I make grilled cheese at home? Is cheese going to be taxed? What about Cream? Coconut cream?! Who gets to decide (let me guess, another sub committee or working group)? What about all the cheaters, all the underhanded ways people will try and get around it?

If you think those in most need of a tax won't be hurt by said tax, you are kidding yourself. If you think the kids who drink too much fizzy are going to be better off, you aren't thinking it through! The people who buy this for them, will just have less money for other things.

I am a grown ass man, educated and moderately intelligent. I do not want people telling me what I can and can't eat.

Fish Tacos are the best. If you are in Auckland, I highly recommend the ones made by Burger Burger. (Is that counted as fast food advertising and will I now be taxed? :)))

The word 'tax' seems to be a red bull flag here. Every time I mention it (twice, I think) people freak out.

I do not agree that a way could not be found to separate out the worst junk food offenders without hitting the rest, but it doesn't have to be a tax on food or on ingredients, so your panic about home-made cheeseburgers or coconut cream doesn't apply. Nor does it even have to be a sugar tax, though this is already being done elsewhere (I don't know if there are any studies on results yet).

In the spirit of trying to think of possible solutions, as some have requested, I have now suggested a tax on advertising. This doesn't penalise any consumer, rich or poor. It doesn't even especially single out regular restaurants, since most of the saturation advertising is by junk food places. It is a way of reducing demand without forcing anyone to do anything. What can possibly be wrong with that?

I don't know if it would work, though common sense tells me that all the advertising junk food purveyors currently do must be for a reason, since it isn't cheap. But hitting advertising would not be telling anyone what they could or could not eat. It would not prevent anyone from having their favourite meal. It might just make them not think about it so often.

I'm not sure what an 'ass man' is but it sounds intriguing.

Along with your annual tax return you will need to submit all your till runners from Countdown etc, take daily photos of your fridge and keep a daily food log which of course will need to be notarised by a JP.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

The fast food market is growing rapidly in NZ:

I wonder if that fish and chips category is misnamed. Imo that's likely to be a generic takeaway shop category. Imo the proportion of actual fish sold at takeaways would have declined starting early 80's.

Interesting if correct. I especially like the growth in sushi and decline in BK. Maybe things aren't as dire as I thought.

it would be interesting to see if there is a correlation between the increase of fast food with the increase in tourism.

I'm not sure any food is inherently bad.  There are foods you should eat only very occasionally and food you should eat often.

This is common sense (or should be).  Ditto the need to exercise.

I genuinely like both. I enjoy the taste and texture of them.

LOL, love 'em both, but accept that I am abnormal in this regard. It's clearly not an inherited condition as if I try to get the kids to eat Brussel Sprouts they act as if I'm trying to make them eat cotton balls dipped in sulfuric acid.

Can someone arrange me a grant? I've got a research proposal to disprove any correlation between political alignment and culinary taste...

You are on a different research project investigating political alignment and healthy food choices whereas mine was the correlation to taste not nutrition. Get yer own research grant!
