So to me, "too risky" means when there is a better than even chance that you're likely to get infected with the virus by interacting with other people. Have we reached that point yet, I don't think so, but the fact that in the last 2 days we have gone from 12 to 28 cases is a bit of a worry!

I wouldn't worry too much about those numbers, as we have a lot of people coming in from overseas, and a percentage of them were always going to have it. There are going to be others as well who come back from overseas that will test positive. This is why isolating them all for at least 14 days is a necessity, no exceptions, including those who sneaked in before the deadline. They also have been asked to self isolate for the balance of their time, although I am not sure why they haven't been 'required' to..

They have now shut them in thee UK from friday https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-51952314 . I am wondering if we are planning to do that, if it isn't better sooner, rather than later.

I am optimistic that we may get through this without a major outbreak, but it relies on everyone doing their part.

Quite simply, they don't have the resources to provide first world style testing, tracking, and treatment. Inevitably this disease will circulate widely in undeveloped countries, and we will never know the true numbers of cases or deaths.

Lets talk about first world testing. India is screening all incoming passengers at all entry points with temperature checks and thermal scans. They have evacuated the most number if citizens and placed them in quarantine facilities to avoid going into community to stop the spread. The article you quote is never impressed with India and its efforts. Here is another article

India went into a lockdown before a lot of western countries did and did not go with the so called self isolation which is a joke. They are not just handing out a form at the airport asking if you are ok or not and then you are in. India even stopped their citizens from Europe coming in to avoid a mass spread and advised they will be evacuated by the government. India has set up amazing quarantine facilities to help people recover. I am not saying the numbers won't go up. They definitely will but not as drastically. They closed everything including schools, colleges, malls, etc. India has handled these things before and knew what was coming their way. They were not sitting like the West waiting for it to arrive and then decide what to do. If you don't let it come in you can control it to a point.

In terms of medical facilities do some research before you make a comment before you say India lacks first world facilities.

Covid-19 was declared pandemic not because what happened in China but because of lack of preparedness of West to combat it.

2 months ago the whole world was against China and now everyone wants to learn from them.

Things are starting to get fairly severe here in the UAE. Entry for anyone who is not an Emirati national is now not possible. Today entry for residency visa holders was suspended. The authorities have also cancelled any unused visas. Lockdown seems inevitable. The good thing is other than some supermarkets running out of meat and bog roll earlier in the week panic buying has pretty much stopped and the shelves are full. We have built up a buffer of a couple of weeks of food in case we get stuck.

We have been sent home from work, which for me is fine, I regularly work from my home office and we set a second small work space up for my wife earlier this year.

Next week my wife will commence trying to teach her class via Teams. Her class is 8-9 year olds and all have iPads. It will be more interesting for my kids who are 5 and 8. I guess they will be doing worksheets which will be a bit tough for my 8 year old who is dyslexic.

Some fools have started WhatsApp rumours about the government spraying pesticides from planes to kill coronavirus. The government had to issue a statement refuting it. It really is important that rumours don't get spread like this as panic is the biggest enemy.

My earlier graph re-plotted with a log scale shows a few interesting trends.

US still firmly in exponential growth phase
Italy started veering from exponential about 2 weeks ago. News this morning said they are still waiting to see an impact of the lock-down & other measures but there does seem to be some impact, albeit still relatively small?
Japan possibly started veering from exponential only three days ago. Too soon to tell if this is real or an artifact.

Re Japan: 1. The numbers plotted exclude the Diamond Princess cases; 2. Japan testing rate has been quite low and like here it is argued that the true rate is higher. However, their current case fatality rate (~5.5% of cases confirmed 7 days ago) is significantly lower than either the US (12.9%) or Italy (23.9%); 3. Even allowing for the preceding, the figures look 'good' given the level of crowding on trains and at train stations during rush 'hour', etc.

Singapore's border has been almost completely open since day 1 of the epidemic and then the pandemic. they are a major hub and arterial route of international air and sea travel. their city is almost fully open. yet their numbers are low.

You clearly haven't walked past a major airport recently. I've been making a walk-by the last few days.

Part reason Virgin stopped, and Qantas/Jetstar are suspending 20,000 staff. Noones flying.

You would be lucky to have 30 people on the lunchtime flight into chc today.

The carparks are empty. The rentals are full. And you can't even hear traffic and the rattle of case wheels

This was yesterday. Usually a apron with at least 4 intl. And awaiting emirates A380

Just to mention: We had all this limits during the last 7 days. It had changed from below 5000, to below 1000, to below 100 to literally your familiy members.

The same is with local! travel ... it had changed drastically within a few days - I would not go anywere. Hard to accept but prevents a lot of issues later on, even outside the city limits.

German government has evaluated the moving patterns of mobiles (anonymously - not monitoring individuals) and can confirm the behavior of the people. Depending on that, the restrictions get even more drastically when people ignore their advice - fair enough.
