joker97:
hangon: ok I'll try to get discussion back to topic...

I don't like the 4 KM (or 3 KM?) "tolerance", simply put it's too small. my "human" cruise control (right foot) in most time, is good for +/- 10 KM based on speedo, by following vehicles, driving to condition etc.

Even if I intend to drive 50 KM, unless I constantly check the speedo and adjust accordingly, it's quite easy to reach 60 on speedo (good visibility, center barrier, few traffic or just following cars ahead, a down hill etc)

The speedo is in general not accurate, +10 on the speedo usually means the actually speed is +5 or thereabout, unless you have upsized tyres then it'd be dangerously close to +10 or even more than that.

And in normal days that would be OK.

But with the 4K tolerance, it's very easy for average drivers unintentionally to be caught, and I seriously doubt those drivers are the right targets.

And if the 4K tolerance forces people to constantly check speedo, or driver slower to avoid fines, it might cause more harm than good.

What I want to say is, the focus (on road safety) is wrong. Police is targeting the wrong group of people and that's not helping their PR.

They are not trying to get the "4k" people.
They are not trying to get the 80k speed up to 110k at passing lanes people.
They are not trying to get the 120k people.
They are definitely not trying to get the 220k people with their radar detector cum jammer cum garage door remote.

They are slowing down the "10k" people.

This post does not make sense

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

It made sense to me somehow - the only effect of this 4K tolerance is slowing down people tend to drive 10K (over speed limit, based on speedo, actual speed is more like 5K over) normally.

The positive impact of that, is probably not much at all.

The negative impact is X number of drivers will be pissed off and make stupid decisions (dangerous overtaking etc).

Indirectly however, if they also declared more police presence (I'm not sure if they have, they are bound to, I'd think/feel), people from each category will drive a bit slower.

inc the 80->110 people will now go 70->110 (well i believe they try to do 100, but look in the mirror and see cars coming so they are then tempted to press on and hit 110, sometimes 115-120, as I have witnessed, just last week).

mdooher:
frankv: I just looked it up, and my fog light bulbs are specified at 55W. That would be under the 1200cd limit, assuming the beam was 40 degrees wide or more, which it would have to be to meet the minimum beam angle requirements.

are you sure about that maths? seems low to me, standard headlamps are 55W halogens (same as fog lights) and are normally far beyond that figure

No, not sure. I hadn't thought about halogens. My figures were back-of-the-envelope, based on a figure I found for 25W incandescent lights (probably household lighting) with a 40 degree beam and an assumption that fog lights, being wider beam than headlights, might be 40 degrees.

But remember the bigger the beam angle, the smaller the intensity for a given amount of light, probably an inverse square relationship. Your headlamps will be much less than 40 degrees of beam width... I'd guess less than 20, so they'll be 4 times as bright as fogs (assuming 40 degrees for fogs). I'm curious what light intensity figure you put on your headlights, and where you got it from.

Assuming the campaign worked to make people drive slower, somehow more people died. Maybe we need to reduce the speed limit to 50?

Heh.  Saw this article and came to post it here.

It's getting so bad, perhaps we should incentivize not dying.  The police and their magical safety numbers are not working as well as they claim they do.

Stupid driver caught doing 25km/hour, causing a queue of 70 vehicles behind him... "Too busy enjoying the scenery, forgot to look at mirrors"...

He was caught because the Police BOSS was in the queue.

We drive behind these sords every day without the police making any fuss. And yes it's cliche by now but they almost always guaranteed to floor the accelerator when they see "400m to passing lane".

Does anyone know if he got fined?

Doesn't look like it, but we will never know for sure.

There fixed that for you. A superintendent is a boss, the Commissioner is the boss.

Possible but unlikely. He was stopped by a boss tongue-out

To be fair I see people speed everyday too. Cops can't catch everyone everywhere. We should know and accept that.

I agree that a queue of this length suggests careless and inconsiderate driving deserving of a fine.

But, to be fair... my recall (from many years ago; no doubt someone can and will correct me) of that road is that it is narrow and windy, with at least one 25 kph corner and several below 50kph. It's entirely possible that the car at the head of the queue was doing well over 25kph whilst the tail was at 25 or less.

How do you know the Police boss was in the queue? All the article says is that the Police boss issued a reminder to motorists.
