Not everyone in New Zealand lives in cities. Out here, fibre is something off a sheep's back and an EV charger would be as much use as a chocolate fireguard.

Fortunately both EV ranges and capabilities are rapidly improving. But speaking as someone who needs his sheep sheared at the moment and also drives an EV every day, I'd really like to get fibre at some point in the next 50 years.

Range is not the issue as much as load capacity, towing capacity, off road ability etc etc.

Imagine an EV that will carry 4 blokes, 6 dogs, towing a trailer loaded with 3 tonnes, across farm terrain, in temperatures of -5. All Day. And charges in 10 minutes.

Then you'll be there.

99.99% of NZ does not have those requirements. That 0.01% will remain as diesel or petrol, and thats fine

And have ahhh oooh yes yes "lasers" always need lasers.
And a coffee machine.

Seriously.
Perceived demands rather than needs are why there are so many urban utes.

It's about trade-offs. An urban EV doesn't need a massive battery, but that's less of an issue when going longer distances if it can be fast-charged at a decent rate. Hence the disappointment with the Mini, which has the small battery AND the crappy charging.

At this stage, anything in the premium sector really needs to offer 22kw AC and 100kw DC as a minimum.

You can't penalise those that do in the legislation, which I suspect is a danger.

Yes, although not sure too many farmers, tradesmen, contractors etc would be up for a price of $105,000…!

Certainly not all, but there are a good chunk whose budget would allow for that. Of course, since it's a ute there's the same tax loophole available to it.

You can't penalise those that do in the legislation, which I suspect is a danger.

That would not be penalising, that would be realising the actual costs of that carbon consumption.

If your farming model requires the use of that kind of equipment, then you can change either your

  • farming model - for example fewer / different livestock so you don't need (as many) blokes, dogs and fence posts; or
  • motive fuel, either going electric or (joining together with other people with this need) source and switch to a low- or zero-carbon biofuel; or
  • transportation infrastructure - horses and maybe pack mules with shepherds' huts to compensate for the slower movement. Yes, back to the 1950s.

Or maybe some combination of all these.

You can probably avoid all these decisions, but your children almost certainly can't. Their future will undoubtedly be without gas cooking or heating, and one in which liquid hydrocarbon fuels are zero-carbon biofuels and are reserved for applications for which there are no technical alternatives - probably long-distance air and sea transport.

It will be different world, and maybe or maybe not a better one

Sure you can, that's the nature of public policy. If it creates excessive pain for those affected you legislate exemptions otherwise it's just tough luck.

This is how we legislate for any number of issues, why would cars be any different?

I agree with that. There does need to be "this cannot suit me" exemptions. Thats now. In the future this thread has let you know you can go electric
