Certainly not all, but there are a good chunk whose budget would allow for that. Of course, since it's a ute there's the same tax loophole available to it.

No, 105k is too much, but near future it will be fine, so let those use ICE till EV catches up.

Great to see the growth in Company Fleet purchased EVs. I'll be happy to pick up ex fleet in a few years time.

I think many of us in NZ are interested. Heaps in fact. The issue is the balance between price and fuel savings. Those with more than a casual interest should be aware that range and use cases can be made to fit most people. Its about that price tag. Fuel savings will soon reduce to about one half of petrol or a bit less, once the 30c equiv/litre is topped up by 70c RUC.

Its a developing story. Also an article estimated EV will be 40% of all light vehicles by 2050. Maybe 70%. id have thought it will be very slow now, and do a bell curve once financial ducks line up. 30 years is a long time, and only 40%?

Your suspicions are well founded. What the trolls in this forum, the media and architects of government surveys like this fail to do is educate them selves on the subject matter. Some key point to focus on:

Q: Why are EV's so expensive? A: The batteries make them more expensive. Everything else about them is the same or cheaper to make as a ICE car.

Q: Are battery prices trending up or down? A: Battery prices have fallen 75% in the last 7 years and continue to plummet.

Q: When will EV's reach price parity with petrol cars. A: Between 2022 and 2025 at the present battery price trends.

Q: When will new car buyers with no environmental or strategic motivation change on mass from ICE to EV's - when the prices are the same or cheaper eg 2022 - 2025.

Q: How long will ICE technology take to be come obsolete - not long - kiwis are cheap skates.

Except for the regenerative braking.

Average car life is about 14 years, so, apart from ICE enthusiasts, most people will be driving EVs by 2040.

However, cheapskates may defer the switch to EV *because* battery prices are plummeting. By waiting a couple of years, they may save more by running their ICE for another year or two (after all, it's resale value will have plummeted) at a higher fuel cost (and maybe petrol will get cheaper as demand drops?) with the expectation that the cost of their EV and its battery will have dropped even more.

I agree that battery prices are the main reason why EVs are so much dearer than equivalent ICE vehicles, but I think there's probably also quite a lot built into EV prices for recovery of research and development costs, which would be far greater than needed for petrol vehicles.

It's interesting that, in the case of the Kia Niro, the 40kWh model costs $68,000, but the 64kWh version costs only $6,000 more. You might have expected that, if batteries were so expensive, the 64kWh model would have cost a lot more than $6,000 above the 40kWh model.
