Dratsab: You saw the flash? Was this a long time ago or can you see in the infra-red spectrum?

There was definitely a flash. This was just as it was getting dark. I know it wasn't just a light or shiny thing, as at this point my eyes were fixated specifically on the van as I cursed it, haha. The people behind me over-taking the same vehicles I were, also got flashed as I went past the van.
Bang! bang! bang! bang! In very quick succession, all four cars behind me. Less than a second apart, coming from a black thing mounted to the tow bar/van's bumper. I don't see the IR spectrum no, haha!

Don't be makin' me second guess myself!

EDIT: This was on Saturday the 24th of January 2015 at about 7-7:30'ish from what I remember.

mudguard: In December I received my first demerit points.
57kmh in a school zone, so 17kmh over, normal limit is, 70kmh outside of the school times. I drive 50,000k per year for work around the country, this was south of Greymouth, which is a 70kmh zone for quite a distance. There is one school further south, I saw the flashing sign, slowed down. Then the second school I missed the flashing sign, saw a whole lot of kids and school buses and wondered what was going on so slowed down. Policeman team out fifty metres later to stop me, I assumed to breath test me (I had driven for three hours of so from Christchurch that morning). He stated, you're going a bit fast in a school zone, I replied where is the sign? I saw the first one about five k back. He pointed forward at the sign from the opposing direction and said that light is on, so it's a school zone. I said where is the one at my end? And he pointed back towards it where it was between school buses.

In all likelihood it was probably visible between the buses or possibly over the top, but he wasn't negotiating. Be said Merry Christmas, and had to post it to me. 20 demerits, and $120.

You'd normally expect the zone sign to be in the clear before the bus stop. At least you didn't get done for passing the buses @50

I suspect there was something on. There were perhaps half a dozen there. End of year school trip? I don't know. To be honest in normally driving through there about 9.30am so have never noticed. I'd prefer it if they made it permanently 50kmh around school zones, or even just 40kmh permanently.

We used to have a term for bikers who 'had' to be in front of you in built up areas... Sacrificial Dickhead. You let them pass, and then stay with them far enough back to see the flash as they trigger a GATSO. Do they have the Average Speed cameras in NZ yet? They are a killer for cars on just about every motorway in the UK now. You simply can't get away with speeding.

or you pull over after the start line and wait. then gun it at 200mph and be under the average speed at the finish!

nzkiwiman: My search failed to find the other topic on this, but I came home from work yesterday and found that I had managed to get a speed camera fine during the new rules (1km over the speed limit and you get done)

$30 for doing 4km/hr over the speed limit in a 50km/hr zone (Gordon Road, Mosgiel) on the 3rd Jan just before noon.
I still haven't seen the speed camera :-)

Slightly annoyed at getting the ticket, especially for 4km/hr over the speed, because it is really hard to stick to 50 perfectly. In order to do that, you HAVE to be going under the speed limit
I am driving an older manual that does not have cruise and I have no idea if the speedometer I use to check my speed is "correct"

On the other hand - only $30.
Not worth any effort to fight it

Buy a radar detector.

On French Peage motorways, they will give you a speeding ticket based on your toll ticket timings!

You often see motorcyclists pulled over 'having a rest' for a while before exiting the toll booths in order to avoid getting fined!

You are also expected to pay speeding fines on the spot in France. If you cannot, they will impound your vehicle.

I'm not entirely sure if this true or urban myth, because I don't know of anyone who as actually fallen foul of it. I have done UK South of France/Italy/Le Mans on bikes and cars at well over the limit, and not had a problem. The bikes probably had a low average because they'd only do 100 miles between fuel stops.

How would you see the cars behind you get flashed? You say you were doing 104kmh you would be well in front of the stationary vehicle and at 7.30 the sun is still up.

All the camera vans in this region have the cameras inside the vehicle and not mounted on the bumper, I have never seen one with it bumper mounted, are you sure it was a road safety camera?

The flashes were in quick succession. It may not have even flashed at me and instead people behind me preparing to pass. I was first in the queue and saw the flashes as I changed lanes and was accelerating.

It's very likely I was going faster at the time. The cars behind me were right on my tail too. A group of us were passing two vehicles traveling at about 90KM/h on a straight piece of road. I sent an "On my way home text" to my girlfriend at 8:28PM. So it would have been closer to 30-40 minutes later that I was potentially hit by the camera.

The camera was inside the van. They are quite large, so would not be externally mounted. The van was a people mover, silvery/grey/blue in colour. It's hard to tell in that light. I saw a black box mounted on the rear of the vehicle when the flashes went off as they caught my eye. I turned my head to look and to give you an example of how fast the flashes happened, before I finished turning my head, all 4 flashes I saw had gone off.

The box I saw definitely was not a camera and the bright light was certainly coming from outside the vehicle as the epicenter of the flash came from below all the glass. I assumed it was a traffic camera as I saw another, more obvious van on the opposite side of the motorway across the barrier facing the opposite direction in roughly the same spot. Maybe 100M apart.

I'm recalling from minds memory, perhaps I have it wrong. It's one of those "I know what I saw" situations. Anyone operate a van like this here? Maybe they can clear it up.

EDIT: Found this on Kiwi Biker forum after a search (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/archive/index.php/t-15665.html)

"With the latest technology they can take pictures through the back windows during daylight (and I presume that means when it's not raining too), and the flash is mounted to the towbar when required..."

Looks like I'm not the only one that's had the same experience.

I don't know if they detect the new miniature ones that the Police have just bought?

Most modern detectors also detect laser speed measuring equipment.

Pretty sure the new ones use a laser, as they can ping people in multiple lanes now, rather than just 1. Laser is significantly easier to detect and jam from memory than the microwaves.

Yeah - I understand police aren't that keen on radar detectors.

Jammers on the other hand I am pretty sure they would nail you to the wall for.
