love it when the refs on the side-lines bring out the flags to pause the game for an ad break, over and over and over through the game

i love american football, i get Sky sport and ESPN just for there coverage of it. the Americans cover there sports so well , it puts our coverage of Rugby to shame . i have never watched a super rugby match or a test in years but i watch 4-5 games a week of american football a week .

They are grown up and left home.

They explained it all to me once so watching was quite good when one knows what its all about.

I went to a high school game one night in Louisiana. Asked about the basic rules, ok, wasn't too bad, forgot those basics now. I did like the atmosphere though. Rednecks wearing caps, cheerleaders going all out, hotdogs, was quite fun. Went to a Nascar race in Atlanta, Mark Martin in the 6 car ran second, I follow him and yes I got the T shirt. Jimmy Johnson 48, won. While in this case I do know Nascar in depth, the atmosphere was great. Jets doing flyovers before the start, speech, "start your engines", the anthem, noise, rednecks, beer, caps, you have to hand it to them, its all atmosphere.

So I found out today that New Zealand and Netherlands are the only countries in the world where NFL season passes are free. Probably because it would cost them more to set up billing than than would make from subscriptions.

Download the iOS app and sign up, then you can watch every game live via the app or on the web.

Might try get into it next season. MURICA.

If I remember rightly ESPN was part of the Sky basic package initially so that's when I first watched the NFL - actually that might have even been in the UHF days.

Then SkyTV saw an opportunity to be "Inglourious Basterds" and moved ESPN over to the Sports package.

eXDee: It's never interested me, but this article from 2 years ago is hilarious if its true.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/stevedenning/2012/02/05/not-so-super-sunday-eleven-minutes-of-actual-playing-time/

Baseball also has never appealed either, i guess i don't understand american sports.

Me too.

That article makes some very interesting observations, this one is very telling
although the typical NFL game lasts more than three hours, only 6 percent of the total—eleven minutes—is actually spent playing with the ball and attempting to move it forward. The other 94 percent of the time is spent sitting, standing around, and talking about playing rather than actually playing.

In this respect, the NFL accurately represents the wasted time in the typical large hierarchical bureaucracy. Most of the managers and workers are not doing anything that adds value to any customer, most of the time.

How the last 30 seconds of a game can take over 20 minutes to complete beats me.

What's also an indictment is the half time show totally overshadows what is supposed to be the main event.

I like watching American Football. I'm also a fan of baseball.

Watched the game after work, without the USA ads it's better with fast forward.

As far as foreign sports coverage goes, American sports get far less coverage than the European football leagues, which seem to have a dedicated section at the end of sport on One News every night.

European football is generally of high quality and we do have a reasonable number of players playing Football here. Our national team has competed at the World Cup which is a truely international event, unlike some other "World Series" type events.  So you might expect there is a modicum of interest in Football here in New Zealand.  Plus I'd hazard a guess we have  far more people of European descent than we have people from the US.

How long does the game last after you take out all the stoppages?

After the game I thought it was a bit of a stretch when the Fox reporter asked one of the players what it felt like to be a world champion.

Well, since it's pretty well not played anywhere else one could forgiven for making the bold statement of being a world champion.

I do have to agree with you though.
