If I had considered 100k to be important, there are other things I could have done.

MikeB4:

I will be brutally honest here, I think the attitude displayed here regarding sport is snobbery mixed with envy and is total bollocks.

Sport in itself is of no value to society other than as entertainment. Thought there is a flow-on effect as those millionaires spend their earnings. But our appreciation and admiration for those professional athletes is disproportional to their public benefit. Personally I'm as guilty of it as any kiwi, but it's irrational.

Is it a societal problem? No I don't think so, but there is a societal shift that places less emphasis on academic achievement, more emphasis on non-academic subjects. There is a sporting industry though, but it is not a big employer. I think that it can still be a career choice, but like any choice it needs to be weighed up carefully, like any profession. Training as a lawyer by no means guarantees success, though likelihood of success is probably relative to remuneration, which is a pretty basic economic theory.

Maybe people just enjoy watching sport more than say, watching... I don't know, TedX talks?

Believe it or not, there are people who get more enjoyment from watching a chess match or robot wars than rugby.

I think i'm in that boat. Does that justify idolizing the good players?

So what? I enjoy lots of different things. Music, Rugby, Squash and Sport in General, movies, tv. They are all valid.

I do believe it. I'm not the one who insists people should like the things I say they should like.

And on that note, now the media has decided that somehow having an openly gay all black would be a good thing. A ridiculously PC article on newshub is now telling is that we need an openly gay all black, as though that would somehow improve the game. The problem with being so obsessed with rubgy is that the general public feels that they need to poke their nose into what's not their business, it's just another industry and they don't need to be told what they should or shouldn't do by the media or public. An openly gay all black doesn't concern me, but in my opinion diversity in sport is no more important than among engineers, or baristas or bank tellers or any industry. I don't think I'd get the warm fuzzies from knowing that a particular athlete who trot's out onto the field is gay, and I can't see why anybody would care.

I thought I had clicked on the wrong thread.
You guys need to look at the thread title and at least head back towards topic.

In an attempt to do this, after yet another dose of Phil Twyford on the telly I'm wondering if he was appointed the 'Minister for Blaming' by the PM. I'm yet to see one of his appearances where he doesn't blame the previous government within the first couple of minutes. Just get on with what you are going to do, carry the people with you, and stop making excuses about how hard it is.

I have seen two articles in 2 days rating the Labour politicians and then their first 6 months. Both written by left-leaning journalists. I'd agree with some, but some of the ratings are awfully wrong. They gave PM 8/10, and I am unsure which country they live, but she is a 6 at best. She has shown next to NO leadership. She does the popular trendy things but what has SHE actually done? Shane Jones got an 8. Seriously!? Winston Peters an 8. I'd likely rate him in 7 and mostly because he hasn't really opened his mouth yet.

As for the break down of how they have tracked in 6 months, it's obvious they needed to mention the things you couldn't not mention that were bad, but the weight they have put on the "plusses" is just crazy.

Back towards the topic then...

There's some interesting insight to be gained from this (unscientific, but large sample size) poll that NewsHub ran the other day.

http://www.newshub.co.nz/home/shows/2018/04/poll-how-do-you-rate-the-government-s-first-six-months-in-office.html

It seems that even amongst voters who elected this government, there is a growing realisation that while they may have had high hopes, the reality is a bit of a flop.
