CLARENCE THOMAS BLAMES INFLATION FOR RISING COST OF SUPREME COURT DECISIONS

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Citing “unfortunate economic realities,” jurist Clarence Thomas disclosed his new charges in a mass e-mail sent to more than a hundred super-donors.

“I have tried to keep my prices reasonable, but, as inflation proves more stubborn than predicted, I have no choice but to adjust my rates accordingly. Sadly, the days of shredding civil rights in exchange for ten private-jet flights are over."

It remains to be seen whether the billionaires who received Thomas’s e-mail will tolerate his steeper prices or whether they will explore a budget option such as Neil Gorsuch.

Reuters - Judge warns Trump not to threaten witnesses in 2020 election subversion case

WASHINGTON, Aug 11 (Reuters) - A federal judge on Friday granted former U.S. President Donald Trump leeway to publicly share some non-sensitive evidence that will be used in his trial on charges of plotting to overturn the 2020 election, but she warned him to tread carefully before making inflammatory public statements about the case.

Even arguably ambiguous statements by the parties or their counsel - if they can be reasonably interpreted to intimidate witnesses or to prejudice potential jurors - can threaten the process," U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan said on Friday.

I caution you and your client to take special care in your public statements about this case. I will take whatever measures are necessary to safeguard the integrity of these proceedings.”

Chutkan's warning came at a federal court hearing on Friday where prosecutors and Trump's lawyers hashed out disagreements over how much evidence in the case Trump can share with the public.

Can Trump resist making "inflammatory public statements"?  It's like telling a toddler not to have tantrums.  🙄

The NY Times - Spiraling Legal Bills Threaten Trump With a Cash Crunch

11 Aug 23

Donald J. Trump’s legal problems aren’t just piling up - his legal bills are, too.

Trump’s complex political orbit is already spending more than it is taking in, and tapping into money it raised years ago - an unusual trajectory this far out from an election.

And the burn rate raises questions about whether such an approach is untenable, or whether Mr. Trump will eventually need to dip into his own fortune to pay for his lawyers, his 2024 campaign, or both.

It is a step that the famously tightfisted Mr. Trump has resisted taking, even as his advisers have begun planning behind the scenes for a potential political cash crunch months before the primaries begin.

Trump is not known for long-term planning, so it remains unclear how much he has focused on the intricate challenges of financing his campaign in the coming months. ...

Trump spent more than $27 million in legal fees in the first six months of 2023 ... with payments to least eight law firms of more than $1 million each, part of a sizable set of legal billings expected to spiral upwards ...

I was going to say, "finally, a lawyer who represented Trump who got paid!" But then I see he didn't really pay for it personally, like, I dunno, a normal person would (or has to).

Trump hasn't paid for anything personally in his entire life - he either inherits, borrows, or uses someone else's money, and/or declares bankruptcy.  Rinse and repeat.   🧐

Ask any African American if verbally abusing a police officer improves an outcome.

Most would safely assume hassling the judge is a bad idea.

Chutkan has often has handed down prison sentences in Jan. 6, 2021, riot cases that are harsher than Justice Department prosecutors recommended.

In the US, Sentencing a ringleader is often brutal when compared to group members.

So my advice to Trump: "Keep doing you. Make sure your defense lawyer has heart attack medicine and smelling salts in their hand when you're sentenced."

...Donald Trump says he has so many allies he can’t keep track of them. When asked by a reporter in Iowa on Saturday about alleged election interference by allies in Georgia, he offered a rambling response: “Many of the allies I don’t know because we have so many allies and a lot of them I don’t know so I don’t know exactly what you’re talking about.” He went on to say, “I can tell you this. These people want to see democracy, they want to see a nation be great again. Right now our nation is … going to hell. So we have a lot of allies that I don’t know, but they’re allies nevertheless. And I can’t speak to that. Nobody can answer that question. But I can tell you one thing, there was a lot of shenanigans going on with the election.”

IMHO, Trump is deliberately trying to get himself locked up, gambling that such an action will guarantee US-wide insurrection.

Possibly true, but a very dangerous gamble (for him, and for us).

It's all about his massive ego.

What really matters, from his egocentric viewpoint, is that he is the centre of attention at all times, regardless of the consequences.

EDIT:  (He may also be developing early dementia, like his father at the same age.)

The NY Times - Georgia Trump Investigation - Grand Jury in Atlanta Is Hearing Election Interference Case

breaking

A grand jury in Atlanta began hearing evidence on Monday in a Georgia prosecutor’s investigation of Donald J. Trump and some of his former advisers, whose efforts to overturn the state’s 2020 election could result in a criminal indictment - the fourth against the former president.

For two and a half years, prosecutors in Fulton County, Ga., have been investigating whether Mr. Trump and his allies broke state laws in their bid to keep him in power.

Nearly 20 people are known to have been told that they could face charges as a result of the investigation.
