BBC: Trump wins last-minute reprieve as judge cuts fraud bond to $175m

A judge in New York has granted Donald Trump's request to pause his $464m (£365m) fraud judgement, giving him 10 days to put up a reduced sum of $175m.

The former president's legal team had previously said he was unable to secure a bond from a private company for the full amount.

He had faced a deadline of Monday to post the $464m bond.

If he had failed to do, the authorities in New York could have started to seize his bank accounts and properties.

But on Monday, he was granted a last-minute reprieve by an appeals court. "I greatly respect the decision," he said. "We will abide by the decision... and post either a bond, equivalent securities, or cash."

At a news conference, Mr Trump suggested he would post the new sum in cash. "I don't need to borrow money - I have a lot of money," he said. "I have much more than that in cash."

If he pays the reduced $175m bond, it would protect his assets while he continues his appeal.

Salon - Forensic psychiatrist on physical signs of Trump's mental decline

25 March 2024

Source: Dr. Elizabeth Zoffman, a forensic psychiatrist and an Associate Clinical Professor of Forensic and General Psychiatry at the University of British Columbia.

Donald Trump’s obvious public challenges with speech, language, and thinking are continuing to get worse. ...

Dr. Zoffmann shares her evidence-based preliminary conclusion that Trump ... appears to be suffering from Behavioral Variant Fronto-Temporal Dementia (FTD) :

  •     Changes in speech patterns with many fewer and simpler words (decline in vocabulary) with fewer adjectives and adverbs.

  •     A decline in cognitive focus on speech subjects with incomplete sentences and an inability to focus on a topic long enough to complete a sentence when not reading from a teleprompter.

  •     Difficulty pronouncing words, word substitution and nonsense words – known as paraphasia

  •     Tangential thinking where the topic switches mid-sentence to some unrelated topic.

  •     Frequent repetition of words and phrases as if his mind is stuck in a loop.

  •     Disinhibition and an inability to control verbal outbursts.

  •     Socially inappropriate behavior – mocking a man with muscular dystrophy, disrespecting fallen soldiers as losers.

  •     Lack of self-awareness in that he apparently cannot see how inappropriate his behavior has become and use his judgment to stop himself.

  •     Changes in movement and gait. His walk appears wide-based and he has developed a swing of his right leg. He appears glued to the floor when he “dances” for his audience. If caught on camera standing still, he appears unnaturally immobile.

  •     The changes in judgment and impulse control have uncovered and perhaps worsened underlying personality traits that others have characterized as narcissistic and antisocial.

It said that the US president is the most stressful job there is.

Trump visited a Trump Organization property nearly one in three days of his presidency and is estimated to have played 261 rounds of golf, one every 5.6 days.

So for Trump, getting booted out of being king is the most stressful job there is. Trying to claw his way back into the throne to avoid prison, financial ruin and worst of all, fools thinking less of him is worse than death!

Oh yeah, somewhere very low in priority in Trumpian priorities, after designing a Trump snow globe to sell for $1,000, hardly worth mentioning, his wife and children's future.

One thing he's kept off his mind is labelling on every piece of clothes, as it is effective for preschoolers. Might become a problem in his future orange jumpsuit.

Sigh. I was hoping justice would not be delayed for a second there.

So if he doesn't come up with this new amount (how was this arrived at, anyway?) the reclaiming-of-assets-business just carries on?

As much as any sane person wants his incarceration and anulment of the Trump movement, how realistic do people think it is that we'll ever see this fraudster and degenerate behind bars?

I'd love to see him get his come-uppance, but I am just not sure that the corrupt legal system in the US will allow it to happen - and I fear that he may well end up as the president yet again, with the proliferation of insanity, corruption, gerrymandering and political machinations that the US has become famous for.

If Trump gets in, I predict a LOT of revenge murders followed by a LOT of presidential pardons.

After that, it gets worse.

Daily Beast - Trump’s Still in Deep Legal Trouble in New York, Despite a Minor Court Win

25 March 2024   "Tough Monday"

Donald Trump’s lawyers are playing legal whack-a-mole to try to help the former president continue to avoid accountability for several decades of alleged illegal activity.

In two different New York courts on Monday, Team Trump seemed to have won a bit of a victory in one, but certainly not in the other.

While Trump’s camp is likely relieved that he doesn’t have to post a nearly half-billion-dollar bond to continue his appeal, the fact remains that both that case and the Stormy Daniels hush money case are still moving full steam ahead. ...

Bottom line:  Both cases are moving ahead. And judgment day in at least some of the cases currently pending against the former president may be slightly delayed, but it is not far off.

Hopefully The Don will have many more "Tough Mondays".   🙄

Washington Post: N.Y. judge sets firm April 15 trial date in Trump’s historic hush money case

Within the span of an hour, one court rescued Donald Trump from potential financial ruin, while another set a trial to start in the height of the campaign season.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee rolled with the rapid twists Monday with his usual defiance and bluster — in split seconds attacking one set of judges and praising another, ignoring reporters then suddenly pivoting to address them, brushing off heckles and welcoming cheers from onlookers along the streets.

The surreal string of turnabouts capped another chaotic day of Trump’s 2024 campaign, with almost no resemblance to the conventional activities of campaigning. Trump last held a rally March 16 as his campaign juggled an overhaul of the Republican National Committee and has not announced where or when the next one will happen. He spent the weekend golfing in South Florida, then dropped into New York for a contentious court hearing and broad-sweeping news conference that most major networks carried live.

The unusual schedule highlighted Trump’s gambit to maximize the publicity surrounding his four separate criminal proceedings, using them to cast himself as a victim of a political persecution of a kind with his supporters who rioted at the formal certification of his last electoral defeat. That strategy helped Trump consolidate support in the Republican primary, but its effectiveness is less clear in the general-election rematch with President Biden now underway. And as much as Trump’s team is choosing to take this approach, it is also coping with the uncharted realities of overlapping, evolving court calendars, serious criminal charges and a daunting cash crunch.

Trump has managed to bankrupt a casino, so bankrupting the Republican party should be easy for him.

Regarding his lawyer bills, as Trump hires "only the brightest and best" lawyers like Alina Habba, Rudy Giuliani, and a long list of incompetents, he would be better spending his money on collecting ice sculptures.

Trump, being particularly stupid, posted on Truth social shortly before getting a break on his bond:

"Through hard work, talent, and luck, I currently have almost $500m in cash, a substantial amount of which I intended to use in my campaign for president."

Of course he goes on to call Judge Arthur Engoron crooked, and break the most obvious rule: "don't make the judge angry".

I expect historians will look upon the current Republicans as they do the Austrians at the Battle of Karánsebes

kingdragonfly: the Austrians at the Battle of Karánsebes

OK, that was pretty incompetent, but at least there were (nominally) two sides engaging each other, and they had the excuse that communications were poor, unlike when the Americans lost something like 300 men capturing a deserted island in the Aleutians in 1943. They knew it was deserted because they'd broken the Japanese codes, but still bombed it for three weeks before attacking it.

They also fought an engagement with a nonexistent Japanese fleet, firing over 500 shells at empty ocean. The nearest Japanese ships were 300km away.

The NY Times - Trump’s Media Company Worth Nearly $8 Billion on First Trading Day

March 26, 2024

Former President Donald J. Trump’s social media company jumped on its first day of trading on the Nasdaq on Tuesday, giving the company an estimated market value of close to $8 billion, larger than established corporations like Mattel, Alaska Airlines and Western Union.

The biggest beneficiary of the market action has been Mr. Trump, who owns about 60 percent of Trump Media, making him the largest shareholder. His stake in the company - the parent of Truth Social, the online platform that is Mr. Trump’s main megaphone for reaching supporters and attacking critics - is worth about $4.6 billion on paper.

For many investors, investing is as much as a sign of support for Mr. Trump personally as it is for his relatively small, loss-making social media company ...

The company took in just $3.3 million in revenue during the first nine months of last year, all from advertising on Truth Social, and recorded a loss of $49 million.

That means Trump Media’s market value is about 2,000 times its estimated annual revenue.

Probably never. First, they'd have to want to learn. Second, they'd have to learn how to learn. Third, they'd have to learn how to check all factors before making a decision. Fourth, they'd have to stop making decisions based solely on what they see on social media.
