When in Rome......
Given perspective, it is unreasonable for the father to expect to attend this specific event, media should go back to hunting millennial first home buyers
Is NZ not Rome in the within the context of this particular discussion?

MikeB4:
Are you advocating repressing peoples from other cultures?
I'm advocating that we want them to follow our idea's and law's as a country and if that means repressing their culture then yes. They've come here, they didn't have to, in order to do that they should integrate into our society.
So in your example for Christchurch what "ideas and laws" have these shops and people broken?
A point of those wanting to embrace cultural diversity.
Let's say Jim wanted to immigrate here.
Jim's ideals are that if some one annoys you, you get rid of them.
Jim believe's its alright to steal.
Jim also believe's that woman are second class.
Should Jim be let into the country? Surely we should embrace his culture?
If course we shouldn't! We shouldn't let him in, but if for some reason he did get in of course we want to repress his culture.
The point really is at what point do we draw the line.
MikeB4:

I wasn't so clear on this one, but generally it was a point about the fact that different cultures don't integrate well.
When they don't integrate well they don't understand our rules. This leads to menu's not in English and consumers rights being denied.
This also discourages locals from visiting, further isolating these area's from the majority of society.
Suddenly you have a whole area with different ideal's to everyone else within your city, suddenly you are cultural wars within your city.
You should not come here and isolate yourself with your home town's belief's, you should integrate or leave to a country that shares your ideal's.

In context it is a muslim sanctioned event for the muslim community = Rome
People are adding proportion to this event which simply doesn't exist, This father should consider pulling his daughter out of this strictly muslim girls school and place her in a mainstream school as this will enable him to attend sporting functions. I suspect he would cite religious reason as main reason for not wanting to do this which make the whole issue a moot point

Personally I believe its awesome. It adds to our culture. I cannot see how consumer rights are being denied. It takes but a few seconds to translate the menu. It does not discourage visitors I would argue it encourages visitors as it adds to authenticity.
By repressing other cultures you are isolating these people and subjecting them to racism.

You should never have to translate a menu to English in a dominantly English speaking country. Translating a menu is not easy if you don't speak their language and would definitely discourage a lot of local's from visiting.
Consumer rights are being denied by them not understanding their obligations under the law, be it the health and safety standards or the consumer guarantee's act. Though we like to believe everyone is being actively policed, we don't have the resources and man power to do this. Rather than following up with their rights a lot of New Zealander's will let it slide and do away with the hassle of disputes tribunal/court.

It's not racism. I'm not advocating we treat them differently because of their race. Race doesn't come into it at all. It's about their ideal's not meshing with ours. We shouldn't be allowing ideal's in that do not mesh with the greater NZ society.
They're not being isolated, they're being forced to integrate or leave. This is the opposite of isolation.

No, you are advocating racism.
MikeB4:
No, you are advocating racism.
Racism - Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior.
If I am not targeting them based on their race, so how is it racism?
If their ideal's don't mesh with ours so we should not be accepting their ideal's into our society.
By your logic, we should let Jim into the country and allow him to kill and steal, because otherwise we are repressing him and are racist?

I find your notions repugnant and I am disengaging

I'm happy to be proven wrong, that's the benefit of having a debate. Everyone comes out better off!
I firmly believe the #1 problem we have today is political correctness gone too far and this is a prime example. Instead of ending the debate you should be trying to convince me why I am wrong, we're no better off if we all decide blindly our way is the only way.

Bravo - as I stated in my post - Bravo
Note: I added the bold
Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

there is quite a clear line imho
1) If they want to do something which is illegal in our society, that is unacceptable - e.g. murder, stealing etc. they would, and should, be prosecuted just the same as anybody else who murdered or stole
2) if their cultural activity is something which is legal then as a general rule they can do that e.g. organizing a private girls-only sports tournament (which is fundamentally no different from the logic behind having womens-only gyms - which is obviously legal and has nothing to do with religious oppression)

No. NZ and its cultural norms are Rome to its borders and include everything within. You don't get to narrow the meaning for your own agenda. Exclude all spectators or exclude none.
The mere fact these girls might be "uncomfortable" with any male spectators should sounding an alarm bell to NZers in general about the nature of brainwashing they're being subjected to and authorities should be investigating - that is not normal behaviour in a western country and does not reflect the values of this society.
