Time Magazine has awarded "The Silence Breakers" as person(s) of the year.

Trump will love this.  There's a section of the article, devoted to him.

Discussions of sexual harassment in polite company tend to rely on euphemisms: harassment becomes "inappropriate behavior," assault becomes "misconduct," rape becomes "abuse." We're accustomed to hearing those softened words, which downplay the pain of the experience. That's one of the reasons why the Access Hollywood tape that surfaced in October 2016 was such a jolt. The language used by the man who would become America's 45th President, captured on a 2005 recording, was, by any standard, vulgar. He didn't just say that he'd made a pass; he "moved on her like a bitch." He didn't just talk about fondling women; he bragged that he could "grab 'em by the pussy."

That Donald Trump could express himself that way and still be elected President is part of what stoked the rage that fueled the Women's March the day after his Inauguration. It's why women seized on that crude word as the emblem of the protest that dwarfed Trump's Inauguration crowd size. "All social movements have highly visible precipitating factors," says Aldon Morris, a professor of sociology at Northwestern University. "In this case, you had Harvey Weinstein, and before that you had Trump."

The Washington Post - The White House’s latest fallback: Who cares if Trump colluded with Russia?

EXTRACTS:

At first, it was all so simple. The Trump White House said there were “no contacts” - zero, zilch - between Trump’s campaign and Russia. But in time this elegant defense encountered a formidable opponent: reality.

As details of campaign contacts with Russia piled up, Trump and his officials instead said there had been “no collusion.”

As more evidence came in showing attempts at high-level collusion, the White House retreated to another line of defense: Trump himself didn’t collude.

One of Trump’s attorneys, Jay Sekulow, now states that it doesn’t matter whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia, because “there is no crime of collusion.”

Another Trump attorney, John Dowd, told Axios that technically the president “cannot obstruct justice, because he is the chief law enforcement officer.”

A year after the Trump team debuted its “no contacts” defense, the attenuated new White House position amounts to this: Who cares whether Trump colluded with Russia and obstructed justice?

Commentator on Aljazeera said that Trump may  be in no hurry to actually build the new embassy - may not be built for a few years.    How about getting the Christchurch company Otakaro to manage the project?    They could slow the project down with the greatest of ease...

Over 12 hours and not one comment? To my (warped) sense of humour, this has to be the funniest thing I have seen since Trump was e(r)ected. The look on Comey's face as Bannon is led away by the FBI was priceless. Ivanka's expression, again was priceless. And Trump's arrogant expression? What can you say?

Sydney Morning Heald - December 9 2017

Bella DePaulo - I study liars. I've never seen one like President Trump.

Bella DePaulo is a social scientist who has published extensively on the psychology of lying.

EXTRACTS from a long and interesting article:

I spent the first two decades of my career as a social scientist studying liars and their lies.

[Trump's] lies are both more frequent and more malicious than ordinary people's.

At the Washington Post, the Fact Checker feature has been tracking every false and misleading claim and flip-flop made by Trump this year.

I categorised the most recent 400 lies that the Post had documented through mid-November ...

  • In Trump's first 298 days in office, he made 1,628 false or misleading claims or flip-flops ...
  • That rate has been accelerating. Starting in early October, the Post's tracking showed that Trump told a remarkable nine lies a day ...
  • Nearly two thirds of Trump's lies were self-serving and about half were intended to disparage someone.
  • Close to a quarter of his false statements (24 per cent) served several purposes simultaneously.
  • Nearly two-thirds of Trump's lies were self-serving.
  • Slightly less than 10 per cent of Trump's lies were kind ones, told to advantage, flatter or protect someone else.
  • Trump told 6.6 times as many self-serving lies as kind ones.
  • An astonishing 50 per cent of Trump's lies were hurtful or disparaging.

By telling so many lies, and so many that are mean-spirited, Trump is violating some of the most fundamental norms of human social interaction and human decency. Many of the rest of us, in turn, have abandoned a norm of our own - we no longer give Trump the benefit of the doubt that we usually give so readily.

Rikkitic: In a glass half full\half empty analogy, I prefer to think it's encouraging that there are people 'out there' who are sufficiently motivated to spend a great deal of time and effort producing such material, which, at the very least, is amusing and tends to relieve our stresses. As someone once said, 'Laughter is the best medicine'.

After all, there's very little that anyone, in countries other than America, can do about the social disease that currently affects that land, except to continue to ridicule the spacewasting poltroon who has lied and tricked his way into the White House, not only endangering America, but everyone else on the planet.

DECEMBER 16 2017 LISTENER

Essay - Donald Dux  - 6 pages, well worth reading.

EXTRACTS:

We seem to be operating on Trump Time, in which scarcely a day passes without some headline-grabbing development that previously would have dominated the news cycle for a week. We are glued to the Trump Show, a hysterical hybrid of soap opera, black comedy, palace intrigue, political drama, spy thriller and wish-fulfilment fantasy. No one, not even the showrunner himself, has much idea what happens next, let alone knows where it will end.

If Kushner is brought down by the Russia scandal, it would be a karmic consequence of Trump's hubris in installing his inexperienced and unqualified daughter and son-in-law in positions of power and influence and their hubris in occupying them ...

The couple had no compunction about capitalising on their access. The very April weekend Chinese President Xi Jinping dined with Trump and family at his Mar-A-Lago estate in Florida, Xi's Government approved Ivanka's application for three new trademarks, thereby gifting her company monopoly rights to sell its products and services in China. The following month, Kushner's sister was in Beijing, emphasising her brother's proximity to the US President while seeking to entice wealthy Chinese to invest in luxury developments with the prospect of getting green cards in return.

I'll go with neither. NK doesn't want a war (because they will lose utterly, no matter what happens), and they don't want to talk (because they want to make sure that they are being taken 100% seriously). My money would be on a couple more ICBM tests to verify their re-entry vehicle, followed by an end to end atmospheric test, and then they offer to sit down for talks because now everybody knows for sure that KJU can hold millions of lives at risk even as far as the US. And the terms on the table will be: you will all leave us alone, because now you know I can vapourise you on a whim.

I do hope you are right, but not sure the world can afford a NK to be fully nuclear capable. All these sanctions are starving the population which could force Kim to act out of survival. America will never let itself be a target from NK under any circumstances.

It really is a lose - lose scenario.
