Sadiq Khan to Trump: you stand for the opposite of London's values

Guardian News

The mayor of London has recorded a video message to the US president as Trump spent his first day in the UK. Earlier on Monday Trump tweeted that 'Kahn [sic] reminds me very much of our very dumb and incompetent Mayor of NYC, de Blasio, who has also done a terrible job'. Trump is only the third US president to have a state visit to the UK.

An excellent speech by Khan but ...

[grumpy-old-man]

I can forgive the subtitles for Americans who can't understand English ... but why the (bad) electronic music dubbed onto the voice track?

It just detracted from the message.  😕

Is it not possible for Americans (and others) just to listen to someone speaking, without music?

The Washington Post - Amid London protests, Trump appears in denial over his standing abroad

June 4 at 7:01 PM

It was an uncomfortable spectacle for an American president - thousands of protesters greeting his arrival in London for a state visit with the queen. ...

Instead of recognizing the public’s expressions of anger, the 45th president has adopted a different tactic - denial.

“I heard there were protests,” Trump said during a news conference with British Prime Minister Theresa May on Tuesday.

“I said, ‘Where are the protests?’ I don’t see any protests. I did see a small protest today when I came - very small. So a lot of it is fake news, I hate to say.”

Trump’s efforts to minimize opposition to his presidency on the first stop of a week-long tour of three European nations represented his latest attempt to misrepresent his public standing and rewrite perceptions about the popularity of his agenda - an effort that began on his first week in office, when a White House spokesman argued, against evidence, that the president had the largest inauguration crowd in history.

The president’s claims in London were just as easily proved false.

After the news conference, CNN aired footage of the demonstrators, including a giant Trump robot sitting on a toilet and repeating two of his catchphrases: “Fake news” and “witch hunt.”

On social media, photos circulated of protesters holding signs reading “Trump climate disaster,” “Don’t attack Iran” and “Trump, you are a mind-bending [expletive] human being.” ...

Expletive not deleted ...

(possibly a photoshopped image - note the position of Her Majesty's handbag )

BBC News - "Trump Dumper" protests over Donald Trump's UK visit

Protesters against Donald Trump's UK visit have launched a talking and moving robot named the "Trump-Dumper".

The robot, which depicts President Trump sitting on the toilet, talks in a tongue-in-cheek fashion and takes on the US President's sometimes controversial tweets.

Its creators hope its popularity overtakes the Donald Trump baby blimp which flew over London in 2018.

The New York Times - President Trump, Unloved in Britain, Still Tries to Play Kingmaker

June 5, 2019

LONDON — It looked for all the world like a boardroom scene from “The Apprentice,” with President Trump appraising the candidates to succeed Prime Minister Theresa May, even as she stood by his side at a news conference on Tuesday.

Boris Johnson? “I’ve liked him for a long time.”

Jeremy Hunt? “I know Jeremy, I think he’d do a very good job.”

Michael Gove? The president, at a loss, playfully turned to Mr. Hunt in the front row: “Would he do a good job, Jeremy? Tell me.”

And then, as if slipping off-camera to interview the contenders, Mr. Trump sought a series of meetings with some of those same lawmakers, holding out his endorsement for whoever would remake the Conservative Party in his blustering, bare-knuckled image.

Mr. Trump, unloved in Britain even before he toyed with intruding on its public health system, would seem to make an unlikely kingmaker in the race to become Britain’s next prime minister.

But some top contenders have nevertheless rushed this week to woo the president and embrace his brand of bellicose politics ...

Playing to tiny audiences of fellow Conservatives who will choose the party’s next leader - and the eventual prime minister - some leading candidates have seemed to relish casting themselves in the image of an American president whose approval ratings are dismal across Britain as a whole. ...

President Trump, Unloved in Britain, Still Tries to Play Kingmaker

The tragic irony of this seems to be lost on Brexiteers.   On one hand - denial that a primary reason behind their wish to depart the EU was xenophobia / fear of migration - but "Sovereignty" and regaining control of British affairs from the EU. On the other hand, a POTUS taking sides, telling them how they should be exiting the EU and who their new leader should be, under a veiled threat that they better do what POTUS says if they want the deal that's going to save them from themselves.

Throw in to the irony mix what Boris was happy to say about Donald before Donald won - that he was "clearly out of his mind", "stupefyingly ignorant", "unfit to be President" and "playing the game of terrorists".

A pair of opportunist grifters, peas in a pod.

Interesting...

Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson, better known as Boris Johnson, is a British politician, journalist and popular historian who has been the Member of Parliament for Uxbridge and South Ruislip since 2015.

Born: 19 June 1964 (age 54 years), Upper East Side, New York, United States

So he once said - then seems to have spent the next decade doing whatever possible - and at any cost - to prove himself wrong.

Apparently, Trump contacted Boris asking if they could meet.  Despite being kindred spirits, Boris has brains enough to realise what a bad idea that would have been - and declined.

I guess to give credit where it's due, Boris chooses his bold-faced lies more strategically and is smarter than Trump.

He's the "bookies favourite", apparently.

He is definitely way smarter than Trump, not that that is difficult. Unfortunately he is no more ethical.
