Yes, let's consider this something only usable if your provider is Spark. I am having real issues with it as it is now generating Captive Portal issues on my Chromebook, like what you get when you login at a motel and the device is expected to go to a default web page.

I can take this back to my friend and connect it there to get an update, but as she isn't close to where we live this could be a while away. Going to give this up for now.

Can I question the "ofcourse" of this?... I'm definitely not expert, but i thought that updates came from the device, due to the load if if they were "server" side initiated. If that's the case, then why is it "ofcourse" limited to just Sparks network, surely things like bug fixes (with a side of feature updates...) is in the best interest of NZ's internet...

To give you a real use case that has happened...

There are certain Vodafone modems, that if they aren't removed from your account. They will reprovision themselves.

Now I will say I haven't heard of any issues in a fair few months now. (so likely Vodafone made a change)

Overall, there are a ton of other reasons.

Taking my professional hat off for a min..
I personally feel spark should have the firmwares on the site, but that's not only my call to make :)

I'd also like to see end users actually keeping these devices, not flogging them and using subpar alternatives.

The smart modem doesn't do a captive portal in the firmware we supply. So that's already sounding like something really weird has gone on or it's not actually being initiated by the smart modem.

Still got my old Technicolor fiber modem (The one with a single Gigabit lan port and 3 10/100 ports)

Those old Huawei units were failing left right and center usually just wont turn on or the whole thing will crash after a couple months and refuse to give out IP's, When it worked it worked fine but it did have some issues.

My old hg659b carked it after a few months and the dhcp failed too!

just offtopic as sparks sells these to anyone for $199. Under CGA they have to keep it up to date :) but hey you are not the one to complain to

Out of the box it will come as 0.06 and then go to 0.13 after it connects to the network.

Sounds to me like your using an older device or not on 5ghz.

i think he meant your device - the one you're connecting to the WiFi. the AP might support 4x4 but if you're using a device that doesn't support that, won't really mean a thing... say if it's a 2.4 GHz only device, e.g. old phone/tablet.
