Free broadband what a great idea. I could haul 80GB every weekend and then not use broadband during the week. I like the idea of free petrol and free electricity weekends as well.

I agree with Johnr (another forum) kelly 2626 needs to lay off the drugs.

jpwise: I still think they should bring back Chello. 512k/128k - unlimited data. Think it used to only be about $40/month aswell.

PS: It was offered via the Paradise.Net cable (originally Saturn who became TelstraSaturn who became TelstraClear). That was a good 5 years or so back.

kelly2626, where do u get all your fantastic ideas from!! Lets say hypothetically that Telecom does start offering free data in the weekends, if will not increase the uptake of broadband. The main reason being is most people who want fast internet are already on broadband, and the remainder on dial up, I believe it would be fair to say are not big downloader’s and as a result this would no encourage them anymore to sign up. It would be little more than a bad business decision on behalf of Telecom.

I suggest you wake up to reality, Vodafone do no make money from free TXT weekends, hence "free". Some of Vodafone’s customers are putting off sending text messages until the weekends. Even if Telecom is loosing money with $10 text with some users, at least they maintain a higher level of revenue through charging customers $10 (first 50 texts at 20cents = $10). In saying that I have no doubt that Vodafone know what they are going in the long run of things, but as do Telecom. Both Telecom and Vodafone will make choices on what is the likely outcome, and what is right for their business models, not on one person’s wish to get something for nothing.

And for the record Jama and Johnr are not the only ones who think you are on drugs.

Kelly2626 - I'm sure your concept makes sense from a customer viewpoint i.e easy to understand, compelling, provides price certainty however, history has shown free weekends type offers like Free TXT (Voda), Free Wap (Telecom) etc can put massive strain on networks and the customer experience, not to mention the customer service facilities that are there to support it..

Most people would be happy to pay normal price to get access to services if the alternative meant a congested networks every weekend where no emails were getting through, slow data speeds for downloads etc due to network overloading

In reality an offer like this may not provide any real benefit to the actual customers it is aimed at (low volume users) as it will be abused by high volume users for downloading illegal movies and music...opps sorry, I mean contributing to our "knowledge based economy"

Other than aquiring new customers, if you ran a business, would you offer something like this knowing a real risk every weekend could be your network gets overloaded, you piss off a lot of your existing customers, blow out capacity in your customer service centres and you get a lot of bad publicity on tv, radio and newspapers on Monday morning? - these are things businesses need to think about when looking at offers like this..

If getting new customers was the point there might be better ways of encouraging them to join.. Free trip to outer space anyone..?

Was quite peeved when they pulled out (with all of about 1.5wks notice!).. Apparently they claimed there hadn't been sufficient uptake to warrant maintaining the service... more likely they had higher than expected update and it blew their pricing model out of the water.

Wasn't Chello like $80 per month? I still have the brochure around somewhere so must track it down!

The big problem with Chello was that it appeared just as the P2P era was beginning and it was this usage that blew their business model out the door with the cost of bandwidth into NZ at the time. I got it installed the day before the service went live and it was amazingly fast however near the end it became a joke, it was impossible to even listen to streaming audio without it continually rebuffering.
