GJB21: Apache works ok in Hawaii - have used in both Maui and Oahu. As stated above, CDMA voice is ok, your can receive txts (but why won't Telecom let you send them??????) and BB data roaming doesn't work (its an "agreement" (read marketing?) thing, not a technical limitation. Haven't noticed any difference between Hawaii and mainland US for this.
Most US places I've been there are enough open 802.11 points that access to internet is not a problem. Worst case go to Starbucks and buy a T-mobile pass - similar to Cafenet here but much more widely available. Lots of cafes also offer free 802.11 - just look for the signs. Last place I stayed on Maui the resort had wifi by the pool - folks used to come from all around with their laptops and pdas and lounge while they surfed - so-to-speak. Also found that just walking down the beach you could stop in front of hotels and hook right into their guest wifi (does look a bit geeky though!)
