freitasm: @geektastic Cubicle? I'd be happy if I had a cubicle.

Small thing to hate: all this new age crap of open plan offices and annoying people.

Even worse, firms who justify open plan as "encouraging teamwork' , "more efficient working" or other such BS.

It was invented as a way of saving on property occupation costs as office rents rose in expensive cities! More people per square metre, less space required ergo less rent to pay!

It has actually been shown to be LESS efficient. However, accountants are not interested in efficiency, only money....

my experience as a manager is open plan enhances productivity and makes the work place a more enjoyable place. People are not battery chickens and should not be treated as such. I have changed

many work places from batteries to open plan and morale, productivity and general office enjoyment has gone up.

Depends on whether your staff are introverts or extroverts.

Personally I detest listening to other people burbling, phones ringing, printers whirring and so on. I'd much rather close the door to my office and put Do Not Disturb up between 9 and 5...!

This is a really great theory, something my wife has been pushing for very hard - though meeting some resistance from staff - when looking at design for their assorted new building projects.

She told me this as I was reclining on the new leather settee in her office, when I dropped in to offer an opinion on whether the McCahon on the wall should be replaced with something less challenging, from the selection of alternative works which were laid out on the meeting table.

... and even worser - the new fad of 'hot-desking' where the number of desks is fewer than the number of people on the staff. You have to pack everything up at the end of each day to leave a clear desk and sit in a completely different spot each new day. No continuity with your normal team, not even sitting with or near the person who is your assistant. Incredibly stupid.

I was pleased that I escaped my employer just before this new arrangement was inflicted on my former colleagues.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

To the truly introverted, that would constitute a form of abuse...! tongue-out

I don't support hot-desking mainly for health and safety reasons. I am OK with it for staff who are in and out of the office all day and use mobile devices.

They proposed this at my work, and let staff give feedback. Fortunately the result was a resounding "no!"

The people that come up with these policies don't think it through. What about specialised hardware? Am I supposed to move my 24" portrait display to a new desk every day? Are all staff supposed to carry their keyboard with them, or are we expected to use whatever filthy equipment is on the desk? I've seen the state that some people leave their keyboards in! surprised

Maybe not so much angry but rather bemused that, for safety reasons, commercial drivers can work no more than 13 hours per day and no more than 70 hours in a week (I'm good with this), whilst it's apparently OK for junior doctors to do 16 hours shifts, 12 days on the trot.

Auto-correct is why I have crust issues.

Yeah but truck drivers could kill somebody - whereas the doctors - oh, hang on .....

As someone that uses the medical services I have always found this worrying. It was also one of the deciding factors for my son's change during training from becoming a medical Doctor to a Psychologist.
