Unless what I am wanting is not available here in NZ I just think its just too much hassle. I prefer to shop here, support local business and employment and in the long term I don't feel I spend that much more. If things go wrong
here there is legislative help and I really do not have hassles with local suppliers if they are approach in a fair way.

SirHumphreyAppleby:

I may have missed something, but what did you actually pay? Did you pay for the priority shipping, or was this a free upgrade?

While values may be attributed differently for private sales, for most purchases it's the transaction value which is applied.

I didn't pay for the postage. That was a favour from the person who sent it to me. I did pay for the item. The person who sent it made an independent decision that I wasn't involved in to send it priority. That put the GST over $60.

I agree. Unfortunately I often seem to want something that isn't available here. I am really going to try to change that.

What annoys me so much about this is I did do my homework and I still got caught out. I am not angry at the authorities but at myself. The package was shipped privately and the sender thought she would do me a favour by sending it 'priority'. I thought I had allowed for enough margin but the postage was higher than I anticipated. She couldn't have known. So the GST came to $65.70 instead of $60. That $5.70 cost me $112. Yes, you win some and you lose some but this still seems a little unfair, especially to those who actually do play by the rules all the time (I'm not claiming to be one).

I really sympathise but i think you need to read the fine prints of things these days. And never think you know everything ... there's always a curve ball you may have missed.

I personally do not agree with paying GST on post because it is primarily for services provided outside of the country. Still, those are the rules.

There is a $110 per person gift allowance, and you could argue the postage was a gift. I doubt it would be successful however, because according to the Customs site the gift must "relate to a special occasion such as a birthday, wedding or Christmas", and this is clearly something you've chosen to have sent to you, which would have still incurred postage charges, albeit less, had you had the item sent directly.

Sometimes you just have to take your lumps. I paid up and will not try to pursue this further. That doesn't mean I agree it is fair or reasonable to pay 26% extra but if the only way to free the hostage is to pay the ransom then that is what you have to do.

Based on this and the other thread you created, Rikkitic, I have come to the conclusion that your luck really sucks when it comes to buying stuff at the moment :/

I most dislike the fact that they add GST to the delivery, 90% of which takes place outside NZ. Also the 'transaction fee' is a rort: we pay income tax to fund Customs to do their job. This is tantamount to an additional fine for daring to import!

Under GST rules it is applied to goods and services. Just like the car license fee they are charging for the service provided therefore GST has to be charged.
Charging GST on the transport part of getting goods here is also correct, theretail priced of goods sold in NZ have the cost of shipping etc included with GST calculated on it so all is fair.

While true if the services are provided in New Zealand, you do not have to pay GST on service acquired overseas, nor obviously, goods purchased overseas unless they are coming in to the country.

The bulk of the postage cost is services occurring outside of the country, so GST should not apply. I believe if you send a package from an NZ Post agent, it's cheaper than using pre-paid postage, because being sent offshore does not attract GST (on goods or services), yet a similar amount of service is being provided within the country.

The shipping costs etc are added to the value of the goods crossing the border it is that value that GST is calculated and is done so by HM Customs as per the Crowns requirements. This is no different to J Bloggs Ltd importing Widgets from Chine selling them to B Jones Shop with the cost of freight added. B Jones calculates his retail price to you and adds GST to that price as required. He does not add GST calculated on the price at China.

At least I paid my taxes like a good citizen. It is such a comfort to know I have contributed to funding overseas junkets for impoverished ministers and unlimited lifelong domestic travel for all those other poor underpaid former politicians and their families. Oh yeah, and also  schools, hospitals, police, old age pension, prisons and defence if there is anything left over.

Umm, the big picture is that no one has won or lost. In all honesty, you misread the information in its entirity and missed the point that the $400NZD includes shipping, and had to pay. I don't know how the ministry is at fault here.
