SJB: Incredibly a lot of people in the UK complain about the licence fee for the BBC which costs them around $5 a week even though they are prepared to shell out much more for the drivel on Sky. They believe it should be self funding

I'd like them to see what you get when it doesn't cost you anything. They might change their minds.

Hear, hear. We watch a lot of BBC content for free through iPlayer and I'd happily pay the UK licence fee each year in return for that. I understand the reasons why the BBC can't officially provide these programmes outside the UK under present licensing laws, but I'm sure they'd find a ready market if they did.

^Another good reason why all the copyright content restriction crime stuff in the tpp is just crap. USA is criticisising the great firewall of China when USA is promoting that kind of policy?

Might have to try out tv1 news to see if I like that :(

MediaWorks (who owns TV3) is a privately owned company and has a responsibility to provide payouts for their shareholders. The scary truth is that if 3 News just wasn't ranking well at all, they could ditch it and save a lot of money. Unlike TV1 which has a (very watered down) charter, TV3 is under no obligation to provide any news at all.

I dont think that truth is scary at all.

TV news is entertainment. In the 80's when it is all people had then perhaps losing it would be a problem, but these days its just a rehash of what you have already read online, but read to you as if you were a 8 year old with mental difficulties.

Don't they also provide news for Prime TV? It wouldn't be great for free speech, and transparency of informtion and news, for NZs only news TV channel to be governmnet owned. Basically tv news these days is really dumbed down, and scattered with youtube videos and celebrity rubbish. You can just see some of the newsreaders cringing when when read some of the rubbish out. Online news sites in NZ are worse. They need to look at how the BBC does a news website.

No news organization in NZ can compete with that but look at the Radio New Zealand site. It's not bad, not particularly dumbed down and obviously done on a tight budget. The layout is old fashioned but the content is OK. The rest could learn from them.

The latest change to the TVNZ web site is just laughable. The news stories come up in time sequence so you can read about Bruce Jenners new frock before noticing that North and South Korea have started a nuclear war.

I don't know where I would be without out the cooking reality shows, the building reality shows, the singing reality shows, or Police 10/7! I always buy all of my blenders and massage chairs from YESShop and the Shopping Channel. The replays of movies that were shown only just last month also really help drill it into my head. Oh and who doesn't love the ads every 7 minutes, I know I do. Not to mention the wait of 1yr+ to get US content, I love being behind the rest of the globe.

I am sure there is a lot of fat in that, plus wages in the UK are a lot more than in NZ. But I am talking about the content more than anything, they don't tend to have trashy stories.
In terms of fat, you can compare what some councils around NZ pay for their own websites, which essentially all provide the same information to ratepayers. I am aware of one new one for a large council that had a entire new website built for about 50k, using wordpress, fully responsive etc. But other large council had theirs done for over 1 million, or 20 times the price.

As a public broadcaster, BBC (usually) provides excellent journalism because they don't have to worry about advertising/sponsors/ratings/or generally pissing people off. I just remember the uproar when Campbell Live, at that time sponsored by Telecom, interviewed the CEO of Telecom about problems with their network. Needless to say, they lost their sponsorship and got in trouble with the marketing dept. That shouldn't be how journalism works.

I don't want "style", I want news - not a "news show."
"News and Sport" has become "SPORT and (some) news".

Several weeks in, after an initial brief look at Story on week one, we haven't bothered with it since. Down to about 20 mins of news each day and that's it for our broadcast TV news and current affairs.
